RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- After dropping its first two games of the season, California Baptist University has figured something out.
The Lancers got four goals from four different first-time scorers and thoroughly dismantled Dominican, 4-0, in a Pacific West Conference game Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Lancers improve to 5-2 overall, 3-0 PacWest with their fifth straight win. The Penguins fall to 0-6, 0-2.
"The guys have continued to try to do what we've asked of them, and really they've been doing that all year," said CBU Head Coach Ryan Jorden. "We are trying to continue to grow and build. We need to have better quality at different moments throughout the game, but as long as they guys continue to grow we'll get better."
It was hard to get too much better Saturday.
The Lancers scored just 4:56 into the game on a set play when Tyler Garrison got on the end of a cross from Willie Rupert, who was slid a ball from Alex Anderson on the initial restart. That was the Lancers' lone first-half strike, but they out-shot the Penguins, 16-1, in the first half.
Garrison and Anderson both had a goal and an assist, and it was Anderson who started a flurry of three goals in eight minutes midway through the second half that put this one on ice.
In the 67th minute, Anderson was the benefactor of a nice buildup and an exchange between Osvaldo Bastida and Michael Salazar. Anderson volleyed in a service past Casey Gibson, giving the Lancers a 2-0 lead.
Four minutes later, Tyler Aagard headed in a Marc Hope cross from the left side just under the crossbar, and the route was on.
Jorge Arreola completed the scoring in the 75th minute with his first collegiate goal, tucking in a ball from Garrison and giving the Lancers their highest goal-scoring output of the season.
CBU now has goals from 10 different goal scorers in its first seven games.
Joey Pacheco and Mitchell Carter split time in the cage in helping the Lancers get their third shutout of the season. The Lancers ended up out-shooting the Penguins, 24-4, including a 10-2 advantage on goal.
