POMONA, Calif. --- One play in the final match of the day summarized California Baptist University's day when in the third set a serve from Andrea Csaszi luckily rolled over the net and after a Mustang player was there to just barely dig it back over Ingrid Carmona was ready, smashing the ball off the floor and towards the rafters.
Simply put, CBU dominated play on Saturday.
The Lancers closed out a clean sweep of the Cal Poly Pomona Tournament Saturday with two more 3-0 victories. CBU defeated Anderson 25-16, 25-14, 25-21 in the opener and then came back and scored a 25- 15, 25-13, 25-16 win over Western New Mexico State.
"This is a great way to start the season," said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. "We did some things well and also have some things to work on. These matches really show us what we need to work on to keep getting better."
It took a combined 20 points for the Lancers to warm up in the opener, playing to an early 10-10 tie with the Trojans. CBU found its rhythm at that 20th point however, rattling off eight straight points to take a comfortable advantage.
Jelena Dragovic helped keep the Lancers hot streak alive in the second going 6-for-6 on kill attempts in the game. CBU cruised through the second with ease winning 25-14.
CBU had to battle back in the third, falling behind 8-0 to start the game. The Lancers got back on track with five straight points, keyed by a pair of aces from Carmona. CBU finally evened the set at 15-15, again on an ace by Carmona. A 7-2 run helped the Lancers close out the set. Carmona and Rauschenbach each had a pair of kills during the run.
Dragovic finished the match with 10 kills and a .667 hitting percentage. Carmona also had 10 kills and led all players with 13 digs and seven aces. The Lancers posted 12 blocks in the match.
"Jelena is a very smart player that does a lot for us in the middle," said McGuyre. "Overall I felt we had great balance offensively with a lot of people contributing."
The Lancers used a 12-4 run at the end of the first set of the finale to break open a tight game, getting a pair of key blasts off the right hand of Carmona to break things open. As if to one up themselves, the Lancers finished the second set with an 11-0 run, winning 25-13.
From there CBU had no trouble finishing the day with a 25-16 final set win.
Carmona led the way with 12 kills (.556) and Csaszi had 11 (.474). Jordyn Siko dished out 33 assists in the match and also posted six blocks. CBU scorched the court in its last match of the day, hitting an early season best .450 against the Mustangs.
The Lancers have yet to drop a set in their first four matches, moving to 4-0 on the year. CBU will be back in action next Friday and Saturday at the Colorado Premiere Tournament.
"Colorado is going to be a lot tougher than this weekend and I think that will really show us where we're at," said McGuyre. "This weekend was good for us to get comfortable and believe in a lot of the things we're doing. We are doing a lot of non-traditional things with this team so getting these matches in was key."
