CBU won the opening set 25-19, but the Antelopes came back to blast the Lancers 25-4 in the second game for the team's worst set loss of the season. The Lancers would never right the ship, falling 25-18, 25-20 in the final two games.
"Momentum was huge in this game," said CBU Head Coach Branden Higa. "We had it early and then they completely seized it with that second set. From there we became our own worst enemy, making errors and just trying to force things."
The loss drops the Lancers to 16-6 overall, 9-3 PacWest, while Grand Canyon moves to 20-5, 8-5. CBU remains in third place in the conference standings, staying a game up in the loss column over Holy Names.
The Lancers were out-hit in the match, .180-.096 and GCU recorded four more kills on the afternoon. GCU dominated the service line, serving nine aces to just two for CBU.
CBU did have three players with double-digit kill totals as Faith Steinwedell recorded 11 and Kim McCalmont and Ingrid Carmona each posted 10.
Lanie Muys led the Lopes with 11 kills and Shelby Taylor hit a match-high .471 on her nine kills.
CBU's Megan Glennie led the Lancers with 21 digs and GCU's Mackenzie Phelps had a match-high 29.
"We knew that was going to be a tough place to play and GCU played well. Give credit to them," said Higa. "It's just going to be nice to get back home and finally play in our own gym."
The Lancers return home next weekend after being on the road for the past seven matches. CBU faces Fresno Pacific on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. and Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. in a pair of home rivalry matches.
