COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- An up and down day in Colorado has the No. 19 California Baptist University men's water polo team leaving the Air Force Academy 1-2 on the weekend.
After sleeping in, the Lancers took on the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds at 2 p.m. CBU defeated the Sunbirds 14-11 earning their 14th win of the season.
The Lancers outscored Fresno Pacific in the second and third quarter to pull ahead in the closely contested matchup.
Four goals from Scott Gleason led the Lancers offensive attack. Chris Vanjoff added three and Scott Butler and Matt Puig each had two goals.
The Lancers took advantage of the opportunities given to them today, scoring on four of six 6-on-5 chances, three of them in the decisive second and third quarters.
The CBU defense forced the Sunbirds to spread the ball around, six different players scored their 11 goals.
In the second game of the day, the Lancers took on No. 13 Air Force, looking to rebound from their 11-8 loss to the Falcons last night.
They failed to rebound, losing 19-10 to the strong Falcons squad, dropping their record to 14-11 on the year.
Scoring was not the issue for CBU against Air Force, as five different players combined for 10 total goals. Puig led the Lancers with three goals, and Gleason tacked on two, upping his total to six on the day.
A big first quarter and third quarter sealed the win for the Falcons, as they outscored the Lancers 11-3 through those two quarters.
CBU had less success in 6-on-5 opportunities in this game, only able to convert two opportunities successfully. The Falcons were able to convert five of their opportunities.
Backup goalie Dylan Vrooman saw some action in game two, making a rare appearance this season. He picked up two saves after starter Austen Ramer was removed.
The Lancers will host an alumni game at the Lancer Aquatic Center on Nov. 2 and then take on Redlands on the road Nov. 3.
