CLAREMONT, Calif. --- Offense wasn't enough for No. 18 California Baptist University to overcome crucial defensive mishaps as the Lancers fell 13-11 to Claremont Mudd-Scripps Wednesday night.
The Lancers fall to 11-9 on the season, while the Stags improve to 8-8 overall with the result.
Offensively, the Lancers had seven different players net goals, led by Keith Jizmejian with four. Matt Puig added two, while Eric Carnohan, Jake Jizmejian, Trevor Rowland, David Ring and Spencer Shore each scored a goal apiece.
"We scored enough to win tonight," said head coach Rick Rowland. "But we didn't play enough defense. We turned over the ball way too much."
Despite the offensive efforts, it wasn't enough to surpass a 6-2 run CBU surrendered in the second quarter. Two of the goals came as penalty shots, pinning a Stag attacker one-on-one with goalie Dylan Vrooman, who made 12 saves and three steals to keep his team in the game.
The Lancers had multiple chances to put the game back in their grasps, but missed 19 shots on the night.
"We need to have a better shot collection," said Rowland. "We kept trying to force it nearside and didn't take advantage of our opportunities."
Many of the missed shots led to counter attack scenarios for the Stags, which they exploited.
"We need to anticipate and transition better on defense," said Rowland. "They caught us off on our many turnovers."
The Lancers will look to rebound Friday as they picked up a game against Air Force. Due to the government shutdown, the Falcons lost scheduled games and were looking to fill the gaps. CBU, who had room for one more game in its schedule, picked up the matchup, looking to avenge an earlier 14-10 loss to the Falcons.
"We have to bounce back and play well against Air Force on Friday," said Rowland. "We will. We'll be ready to play."
