FRESNO, Calif. --- Having controlled the first two quarters, the No. 17 California Baptist University men's water polo team wasn't about to let the game slip away in the fourth.
The Lancers wound up saving their best for last in a 16-11 road win Wednesday evening at Fresno Pacific. It marked CBU's second win a row to improve to 13-9 overall, while Fresno Pacific fell to 6-10 on the season.
“We just played a poor third quarter before we got fired up and got on the same page defensively,” said head coach Rick Rowland, whose team will play four more games over the next three days. “We had a lot of steals in that fourth quarter and that led to some transition goals.”
Matt Puig, Trevor Rowland and Keith Jizmejian all recorded hat tricks for CBU.
CBU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter--with back-to-back goals from Jizmejian to open the contest--and added four more goals in the second, as it took a three-goal edge into halftime. Things began to unravel for the Lancers in the third, however, as Fresno Pacific rallied to tie the contest at 10 with a 5-2 run.
“We changed up our defense and got it together,” said Rowland. “We just weren't on the same page.”
Joseph Moorman was strong in the cage with 15 saves and contributed to the offense with two assists for the Lancers.
CBU continues its road trip in Northern California with a Thursday night matchup at Santa Clara as part of the Santa Clara Rodeo. The two teams square off at 6 p.m.
