RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University came alive offensively in the second half, scoring three goals in the second period to defeat Chaminade 4-0 Tuesday.
"I thought the guys performed well today," said head coach Gregg Schroeder. "I thought they created a lot of offense in the attack and we were sharp enough defensively to not let anything dangerous come our way."
The win improves CBU to 5-3-1 overall, 5-2 in the PacWest, extending its winning streak to four games. The Silverswords fall to 0-9 on the season, 0-5 in conference with the loss.
"Overall, I'm pleased with the effort," said Schroeder. "I know Chaminade has not had the best results this year, but every day is a different day and you have to be able to put a team away. I was happy with our ability to do that."
Braedan Pilcher got the ball rolling first for the Lancers, scoring in the 14th minute of the game. James Bagdanovich sent a long ball deep into the Silverswords' defensive third and Pilcher beat the defender to it. Pilcher found himself one on one with Chaminade's goalkeeper and took a touch to avert the diving keeper and place the ball into the open net.
"Braedan had a great effort to get past the goalkeeper," said Schroeder. "He worked hard to keep it from going out and put himself in a position to tuck it away."
Chris Gaitan looked to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 24th minute after he beat the Silversword goalkeeper, but a defender came out of nowhere to slide and keep the ball out of the net. Minutes later Jonathan Fausto's shot was just off target, connecting with the post instead of the back of the goal.
"I'm pleased with our offensive effort," said Schroeder. "We hit the post a couple times and they're goalkeeper had some great saves. They also had a defender save it off the line. We could have easily had a number of goals."
Despite the Lancers creating more chances, they wouldn't find the other goals until the second half. Marc Hope scored in the 58th minute, rocketing a shot to the far post from about 10 yards out off a pass from Alex Anderson.
"I was happy with the fact that the guys kept composure despite not finishing chances earlier," said Schroeder. "They kept their heads level and were able to tuck three goals away in the second half. Usually, if you get a ton of chances and don't finish them, you start to get frustrated and overthink things, but we didn't."
Bogdanovich got himself into the attack in the 63rd minute, slotting the ball back to Jeromy Gurule to give the Lancers a 3-0 lead.
In the 85th minute, Josh Mobley sent a ball deep to the right side, finding Gurule open. Gurule crossed the ball back across the front of the goal to teammate Josh Robinson at the far post, who sent it home to give CBU the 4-0 victory.
"I loved that Jeromy had the chance to finish the fourth goal himself, but instead decided to give it to his buddy he grew up with," said Schroeder.
Ian Clark came up with three saves to keep the cleansheet for the Lancers.
