RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University powered through three-straight sets against conference opponent Hawaii-Hilo on Saturday, defeating the Vulcans 25-23, 25-18, and 25-21.
CBU is now 17-9 overall, 14-4 in the PacWest, while the Vulcans fall to 11-11, and 5-11 in conference.
Lauren Marr tipped off the first set with a service ace followed by a kill set up by Taylor Parker but the Vulcan's quickly showed up to tie the game at 4-4. The Lancers' fought hard in a back-and-forth battle throughout the set and relied on crucial kills by Jenna Perry and Jelena Dragovic late in the game to bring the Lancers back on top in scoring. CBU took the first set on back-to-back errors by the Vulcans for a 25-23 finish.
The Lancers controlled the second set after bouncing back from a 0-2 start with a kill by Kim McCalmont. CBU maintained a solid lead with Malika O'Brien leading in kills with six total in the set. Dragovic closed out the set with a kill set up by Parker to bring CBU to a 25-18 completion.
CBU came back from behind late in the third set with four-straight kills by O'Brien, Dragovic, and a pair from Marr to bring the Lancers' to a 17-16 lead--which they maintained to finish the set. Marr led the set in kills with six in total. Perry brought the set to a quick end with a kill, set by Parker, to give the Lancers the 25-21 win.
The Lancers racked up 43 kills on the night for a .264 attacking percentage.
Parker put up 37 assists, which played a part in O'Brien, Marr, and Dragovic's 13, 10 and seven kills in the match, respectively.
“I thought that Taylor set a really good match, she did a good job of distributing the ball evenly, which is something we've been working on a lot,” said head coach Branden Higa. “She was able to do that because our middles were just working really really hard to transition.”
The Lancers' take on Hawaii Pacific in their final home match on Monday night at 7. The game will honor active military and veterans since the game falls on Veteran's Day.
