OAKLAND, Calif. --- Matt Daugherty had two hits, including his sixth home run of the season, and David Herd went the distance to lead California Baptist University to a 4-2 win in the opener, but the Lancers could only muster three hits in the nightcap in falling to Holy Names 2-1 and had to settle for a doubleheader and series split with the Hawks.
It is the first PacWest series the Lancers have not won this year as they move to 26-12 overall, 19-5 PacWest.
The Hawks are now 12-26, 9-17.
In the opener, the Lancers fell behind 1-0 early but tied the game on an RBI groundout by Ryan Cathers in the second. Then in the third, Daugherty led off the inning with a homer and Zach Esquerra followed with a bunt single. After Esquerra stole second, he was sacrificed to third by Matt Marnati. Cathers then drove him in with a single to make it 3-1.
Herd (6-2) struck out six and walked just one while allowing the two runs. He scattered four hits, two of them in the fifth when the Hawks got within 3-2.
Blair Moore added an RBI single to right in the seventh, scoring Mark Sanchez, who led off the inning with a single, to give the Lancers a 4-2 lead.
Daugherty also singled and scored in the second.
In the nightcap, the Lancers had just one runner reach second and two reach at all through the first six innings against Holy Names starter Jayse Banister.
The Hawks got all they needed in the fourth, both runs coming when the Hawks strung together four straight two-out hits against Adam Hofacket (2-4), who allowed just one hits in the other four innings he threw. Hofacket struck out five and didn't walk a batter.
In the top of the seventh, Daugherty hit a one-out infield single and Moore followed with a walk, chasing Banister. Esquerra followed with a single up the middle to load the bases with one out. Brian Glynn struck out pinch-hitter Antonio Chavarria before issuing a bases-loaded walk to Marnati. He then struck out pinch-hitter Michael Fagan swinging to end the game.
Two of the Lancers' three hits came in the seventh. Matt Thrall was the only other Lancer to get a hit, singling to right in the fifth. Luke Esquerra went 0 for 3 in the nightcap, bringing his 22-game hitting streak to an end.
