OAKLAND, Calif. – California Baptist University finally broke through its streak of overtime games and picked up a 2-0 win over Holy Names Saturday afternoon.
“It's been hard to play three overtime games and not come out with a win so it feels great to get the win today,” said head coach Gregg Schroeder. “I was hopeful the guys would respond well and they put in the effort and did a good job defensively. The guys were determined to win, which makes me happy.”
Alex Anderson scored both goals for the Lancers, giving CBU (1-2-1, 1-1 PacWest) its first win of the season. The Hawks drop to 0-4 overall, 0-2 in conference action.
From the get-go, CBU was poised on the attack, firing off two shots in the first five minutes of play, and outshot the Hawks 19-13 overall.
“We really had a lot of dangerous chances offensively,” said Schroeder.
The Lancers continued to press the Hawk defense and capitalized off a misclear from HNU's goalkeeper Phillip Poser. Anderson hammered a volley shot from distance to give CBU an early 1-0 lead.
HNU had a chance to find the equalizer in the 22nd minute, but CBU goalkeeper Ian Clark made a low diving save to keep the Hawks off the board.
“Ian made a huge save to keep us in the game early on,” said Schroeder. “Our backline had a solid effort and was very instrumental in getting the win today.”
Coming out of the half with just the one-goal lead, the Lancers were determined to add an insurance goal into the mix.
The Lancers found what they were looking for in the 63rd minute, with Anderson finishing his second goal of the game. Dominic Escalera took the ball down the left side of the field and sent the ball into the box. Poser got a paw on the ball but couldn't keep it in his grasp, allowing Anderson to knock it home.
Anderson looked to complete the hat trick in the 75th minute, but Poser kept the third score out of the net.
“Alex had a great performance overall,” said Schroeder. “He very well could have had three or four goals.”
HNU pressed late in the half, hoping to put something on the board, but the Lancer defense held the Hawks off to keep the 2-0 victory.
Looking to build off the first-win momentum, CBU heads back out on the road to Fresno Pacific for a Tuesday night match with a 5 p.m. kickoff. The Lancers are back home next Saturday as they host BYU Hawaii at 3:30 p.m.
