SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- California Baptist University kept its conference record perfect to start the season, defeating Dominican 3-1 (25-20, 25-16, 22-25, 25-19) Saturday night.
The Lancers completed a clean sweep of its conference season-opening road trip after taking down Academy of Art and Notre Dame de Namur the previous two days.
“This was a quality win for us after a long road trip,” said CBU Head Coach Branden Higa. “For our girls to play as fresh as they did after three-straight matches was awesome. It was a good way to close this stretch out.”
The Lancers fell behind 9-3 right out the gates in the opening set, but stormed back with a 5-0 run thanks to three Penguin errors.
CBU would even the game at the 18-18 mark and then closed the set with another five-point run, once again getting a pair of errors from Dominican.
After falling behind early, the Penguins closed to within three late in the second, at 16-19, but the Lancers again dominated the sprint to the finish, blasting six consecutive points for a convincing second set win.
After a late three-point run sunk the Lancers in the third game, CBU quickly got back on track in the fourth.
The Lancers went up 11-5, forcing a Dominican timeout to open the final game. It wasn't close the rest of the way as CBU cruised to the win.
CBU was led by Kim McCalmont's 18 kills and Katie Rotondo's 22 digs.
“Malika O'Brien was great at the net for us tonight as well,” said Higa. “Katie also had a great match in the back row. She controlled the match and made some key plays.”
O'Brien posted a match-high eight blocks.
As a team, the Lancers held a .179-.109 hitting advantage and out-blocked the Penguins 13-6.
Dominican was led by Amanda Wasko's 11 kills.
The win moves the Lancers to 6-5 on the season and 3-0 in PacWest play. Dominican drops to 1-9, 0-2 in conference.
After sweeping its conference opening three-match road trip, CBU will head home for matches against Fresno Pacific and Holy Names.
