RIVERSIDE --- California Baptist University got a pair of second half goals and dominated possession en route to a 3-0 victory over BYU-Hawaii Saturday.
Braedan Pilcher struck twice for the Lancers as CBU held possession through the majority of the final 30 minutes of play to seal the much needed victory.
“We have been focusing on the details all week and today things really came together for us,” said CBU Head Coach Gregg Schroeder. “You don't want to get too high or too low in a season and the guys definitely could have gotten too low after Fresno, but instead they responded with a great performance today.”
Pilcher struck just over 24 minutes into the game, drilling a short pass from Alex Anderson through the keeper's legs for his first goal of the season. The sophomore midfielder then struck again in the 62nd minute, sliding a pass from Marc Hope into the right side of the net to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead.
From there CBU turned it up another notch, dominating possession all the way to the final whistle in what was arguably the team's best performance of the season.
“Teams are always more comfortable playing from ahead and I think that's when you see how good they really can be,” said Schroeder. “If we bring that type of focus and execution from the outset we can be very good.”
Dominic Escalera all but sealed it with an unassisted goal in the 80th minute, beating BYUH keeper Chris Pineda to a free ball and playing it in behind the net-minder to slot an easy score. Escalera nearly added a second just minutes later, missing an open shot wide, as CBU kept the pressure on to the end.
The Lancers posted 20 shots in the game, sending 11 of them on goal.
Ian Clark made four saves for the Lancers, posting his second shutout of the year. The Seasiders took 11 shots in the game and had five on target.
CBU moves to 2-3-1 overall, 2-2 in the PacWest with the win and BYUH drops to 2-3-1, 0-2.
