CLAREMONT, Calif. – After tangling with two NCAA top-15 teams the last two days, California Baptist University did not get a breather, playing its third and fourth games in three days at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Redlands Saturday.
Both games went into overtime, with the Lancers opening the day with a 14-13 overtime victory over CMS and then falling at Redlands, 16-15, to end the day. The Bulldogs and Stags are the third and sixth-ranked teams, respectively, in NCAA Division III, while CBU is receiving votes in the NCAA rankings. After battling through three overtime and four one-goal games this week, CBU's record is now 13-9 this season, while Claremont is 4-12 and the Bulldogs sit at 4-14.,
Joseph Moorman propelled CBU to victory in its opener, setting a school record for saves in a game after blocking 27 shots in the one-goal win. CBU alumni and current Lancer women's water polo head coach Jonathan Miller held the previous record for a 22-save performance against Pepperdine on Sept. 9, 2007.
Offensively, Eric Carnohan, Brent Teraoka and David Ring logged hat tricks in the Lancers' victory over the Stags. Carnohan scored two of his three goals of the game in overtime, including the game-winner with 56 seconds left, as the Lancers won the extra-time session, 3-2. Ring was responsible for the other overtime score.
Going into extra time tied at 11-11, CMS scored first before Ring knotted the score at 12-12 halfway through the first session. Carnohan scored his second goal of the contest 21 seconds before the break to give his team a 13-12 edge.
CMS tied things again with 2:30 to play before both offenses began to slow down. CBU's defense managed to kill a six-on-five opportunity with 1:37 remaining, which led to Carnohan finding the game-winner with less than a minute on the clock.
To start the game, goals from Elad Gunya and Carnohan gave the Lancers a 2-0 lead in the first quarter. That was the only two-goal lead of the game, as the Stags tied things at 2-2. No team led by more than a goal the rest of the way, with 10 ties in regulation and 12 overall.
In the finale at Redlands, Carnohan, Teraoka and Ring all logged hat tricks again. Carnohan and Teraoka each tallied four goals, while Ring finished with three. Cody Wetherbee also had two goals for the Lancers.
CBU won the first quarter on a score of 5-3 after two goals from Teraoka, Carnohan and a score from Ring. The Bulldogs refused to fall into a big hole and even rallied for a 7-6 lead by halftime. Redlands opened the scoring in the second half for a two-goal edge, 8-6, before the Lancers rattled off four-straight goals -- from Carnohan, Jake Jizmejian, Teraoka and Clint Walling -- to take a 10-8 edge with 1:48 left in the third.
The Lancers pushed out to a three-goal lead, 12-9, with 6:48 to play when Teraoka and Carnohan opened the fourth quarter with goals. Redlands charged back, however, to send the game into overtime with the score all even at 13-13. Wetherbee and Teraoka both scored in the first half of overtime, with the latter coming eight seconds before the break to keep things tied at 15-15. Redlands was the only one able to scratch out a goal in the second half, with the winner coming with 56 seconds left, claiming the 16-15 victory.
CBU will look to regroup, as it resumes WWPA play next week, with a trip to No. 8 UC San Diego Friday. The Lancers then head to Fresno Pacific on Oct. 23 for a 7:30 p.m. game after that.
