Hernandez Finishes 6th at Vanguard

VANGUARD INVITATIONAL RESULTS
COSTA MESA, Calif. – With most of its top-eight runners resting from last week's Greater Louisville Classic, California Baptist University resumed action at the 2014 Vanguard Invitational on Saturday.
The Invitational was held at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa with the men's 8,000-meter race beginning at 9:45 a.m.,The Lancer men had an impressive third-place finish for a total of 96 points in their competition with 13 other teams. CBU,finished right behind Loyola Marymount by twenty points, as well as UC Irvine by one point. The Lancers beat Vanguard, which is ranked 19th in the NAIA.
"With most of our top runners resting, this really was a chance for these athletes to shine and demonstrate the depth of our team," CBU Coach Ben Gall said.
Freshman Hector Hernandez led the Lancers to their third-place overall finish in the 8K with his time of 25 minutes, 33.19 seconds, making it into the top-10 at sixth out of 142 runners.,Sophomore Lucas Graham landed on the 14th spot, with his posted time of 26:04.93, while David Aguilar was a few seconds behind him finishing in 23rd and logging a time of 26:23.05.
"Individually, I thought Hector Hernandez, Lucas Graham, and David Aguilar executed their race plans well and really made some huge steps forward that will help the team in the postseason," said Gall.
As for the rest of the Lancers, Jeremiah Gotts finished 28th clocking in at 26:30.41. Freshman Anthony Avila clocked in at 27:17.98 while Elliot Choe was a few seconds being him clocking in at 27:21.56 and Julian Hernandez finishing at 27:40.72.
"We are very excited about the performances today and feel that this is a great indication of the progression of our team this season," said Gall.
The Lancers return to action next Saturday at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational, which is set for a 9:00 a.m. start time.
