HONOLULU, Hawaii – For whatever reason, it has been in three or five sets this year when it comes to California Baptist University's wins. The Lancers broke that trend at Chaminade Saturday, concluding their three-match trip through Hawaii with a four-set victory.
CBU and the Silverswords battled through the first three sets, with each being decided by the minimum two points and the first two going into extra points. After a third-set loss, the Lancers rebounded big in the fourth to claim the 29-27, 26-24, 23-25, 25-12 win on the road.
"We were just sick of going back and forth and we really just wanted to get nasty out there and put balls away," middle blocker Jenna Perry said. "We changed our mindset, we just wanted to get out of there and do what we do."
On the year, CBU is now 12-7, 8-3 in the PacWest, while Chaminade evened its record to 11-11 and 4-8 in conference. It allowed the Lancers, who are receiving votes in the NCAA Division II polls, to erase a bitter taste left in their mouth from Friday's loss to fourth-ranked BYU-Hawaii. A balanced offense, with three hitters holding double-digit kills, highlighted the victory.
"I was super excited to get back out there, I think we were all angry after BYU," Perry said. "We all just wanted to prove ourselves and establish who we are as a team."
Michelle Waber had a match-high 16 kills on an impressive .324 attack percentage, but it looked modest next to Perry's attack rate. The converted middle blocker had 13 kills on 16 attacks, never committing an error for an .812 clip. Lauren Hackett added 11 kills, six digs and two blocks for CBU.
Jordyn Siko conducted the offense beautifully at setter, logging 43 assists, six digs, five kills and four blocks for the Lancers. Becky Moodie had a match-high 17 digs and Jessica Harris had four kills, four digs and five blocks in the win for the Lancers.
CBU was given an excuse to fold late in the first set. Waber, who had seven kills in the opener, appeared to give the Lancers set point, 25-24, with a kill but a controversial back-row attack call gave it to Chaminade instead.
Perry helped the visitors hold on, however, making it 25-25 after attacking early off a Waber dig and sending down the line for a kill. The Silverswords fought back for set point, 26-25, but Siko evened the score again with a dump set that landed for a kill. Two attacking errors from the Swords and a Waber kill led to the Lancers closing out the set on a 3-1 run for the 29-27 victory.
In the second set, CBU jumped out to a 9-3 lead thanks to a boatload of unforced Chaminade mistakes. The Lancers were not out of the woods yet, though, as Chaminade tied things up at 13-13. The Lancers went back up by three, 19-16, on three Waber kills and a handful for Silverswords errors. Still, the home team was not done and forced a tie at 22-22.
Like the first set, CBU did not panic and took set point, 24-23, on a Waber kill and Chaminade error. A Kawai Oleole kill tied things again at 24-24, but Marr broke that with a kill and another Silverswords hitting miscue gave the Lancers a two-set lead.
CBU trailed Chaminade 14-9 in the third set, but came back to tie things up at 15-15 on two kills from Hackett, another from Perry and the rest of the points coming on Silversword errors. Both sides played to seven more ties down the stretch, with Chaminade taking it on a 2-0 run provided by a Ku'ulei Lynch kill and a CBU attacking error.
With momentum momentarily to the home team, CBU seized it back. After opening the fourth set tied at 5-5, the Lancers went on a dominating 10-1 run – powered by two kills from Marr, Siko and Perry – to take a 15-6 lead. Harris began to shine down the stretch, scoring three of her team's final 10 points on two kills and an ace. Perry also had two kills in the final 10 to help seal the win.
The Lancers return home to host PacWest rival Azusa Pacific Wednesday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Dixie State on Saturday for an 11 a.m. tilt.
