SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- California Baptist University knew it was in for a battle Thursday night when it headed to Point Loma for a match against the team conference coaches predicted to win the PacWest title.
The Lancers fought the Sea Lions hard on the road, taking a set off the host squad, but was ultimately held off in four, 25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19. CBU is now 8-6, 4-2 in the PacWest on the year, while Point Loma moved to 9-5, 6-0 and now has now won six straight.
For the second match in a row, CBU had two players – Jordyn Siko and Michelle Waber – log double-doubles. Siko put up 34 assists and 16 digs, while Waber had 13 kills and 11 digs. Becky Moodie recorded 15 digs and six assists, and Lauren Hackett finished with 11 kills and four digs.
The first set could have gone either way. PLNU had the momentum early and led by 14-12 before a 4-0 Lancer run – started by kills from Waber and Lauren Marr (eight kills) – gave CBU a 16-14 lead and forced a Sea Lions timeout.
Consecutive kills from Siko and Hackett kept the Lancers up by two, 19-17, but Point Loma stopped their momentum with a 5-0 run that forced a CBU timeout. The visitors battled back within a point, 23-22, on kills from Hackett and Jessica Harris (six kills, four blocks).
Alyssa Dwyer forced set point with a kill for Point Loma, and despite a kill from Marr, the Sea Lions held on, 25-23.
The Lancers were in danger of going down 2-0, facing a 17-13 deficit in the second set. CBU rattled off six-straight points – sparked by two kills from Waber and an ace from Harris – to take a 19-17 lead.
Back-to-back Point Loma errors and a Marr kill gave CBU a 22-19 advantage. The Sea Lions came within two with the next point, but CBU fought back to take the set, closing on a 3-0 run – book ended by kills from Jenna Perry and Hackett – to win 25-20.
Things were tight again in the third once the Lancers battled back from a 7-3 hole to even the set at 12-12. Point Loma broke through, however, using an 8-2 run to take control en route to a 25-17 win.
Hoping to grab the next set and keep the match alive, CBU kept up the fight in the third set, but fell behind early, 15-8. The Lancers pulled within five, 19-14, with a 3-1 charge, but the Sea Lions held onto their led. Another late 3-0 spurt brought CBU within 23-19 before the Sea Lions scored consecutive points to end the match 25-19.
CBU returns home to host a PacWest rematch with Academy of Art on Oct. 10 at 7:00 p.m. The Lancers will look to avenge an earlier five-set loss on the road with the Urban Knights, before hosting Notre Dame de Namur the following night.
