LAIE, Hawaii – While it was not a new sight, California Baptist University showed its ability to hang with one of the top teams in the NCAA Division II rankings in its PacWest match at fourth-ranked BYU-Hawaii Friday night.
CBU bounced back from a loss in the first set and nearly toppled the Seasiders in the second set. The home team pulled out a comeback and rode the momentum to a three-set victory, 25-11, 25-23, 25-10. The Lancers now sit at 11-7, 7-3 in the PacWest with BYU-Hawaii still holding the top spot in the conference standings at 13-3, 10-0.
Lauren Hackett had 12 kills on a .303 percentage (12-for-33) and an ace for the Lancers, while Jordyn Siko produced another double-double on 20 assists and 10 digs, along with four blocks and three kills. Becky Moodie had a team-high 18 digs. Jenna Perry was good for 10 CBU points with five kills and five blocks.
CBU showed flashes in the first set, evidenced by it matching the Seasiders early on to a 3-3 tie on two kills from Hackett and another from Perry. BYU-Hawaii then raced out to a 12-4 lead. The Lancers regrouped out of a timeout and used a 5-2 run to pull within five, 14-9, after kills from Siko and Hackett. The Seasiders went on to score eight of the next nine to take a 22-10 advantage en route to a 25-11 victory.
Again in the second set, CBU got out to a good start and forced a pair of Seasiders timeouts in the early going as it took leads of 10-5 and 14-7. Hackett carved out the Lancers' first four points of the set with three kills and an ace, and a Michelle Waber kill gave the visitors a quick 5-3 lead. Three-straight kills from Lauren Marr, Siko and Perry upped CBU's lead to 10-5 and forced BYU-Hawaii's first timeout. The home team responded with the next two points before the Lancers rattled off the next six points for a 16-7 advantage.
The Lancers kept on the attack and led by six, 21-15, on a Perry kill before the Seasiders began their comeback, pulling within three, 21-18. Another Perry kill and Tori Hinderaker ace gave CBU a 23-18 edge, but BYU-Hawaii closed out the set on a 7-0 spurt.
After both sides played out to a 4-4 tie in the third set, the Seasiders scored seven straight for an 11-4 advantage. The Lancers came back with another strong run, pulling within five points at 12-7 and 14-9 on kills from Hackett, Perry and a handful of Seasider errors. Down the stretch, Jessica Harris grabbed a kill for CBU to break up a run briefly that ended the set, 25-10, and match.
CBU will conclude its PacWest road trip through Hawaii with a stop at Chaminade Saturday for a 4 p.m. PST match. The Lancers will then return home for a match with PacWest-rival Azusa Pacific Wednesday at 7 p.m.
