Gut-wrenching Overtime

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University showed determination and perseverance against its rival Azusa Pacific, but dropped a gut-wrenching double overtime 3-2 loss Saturday.
The tough one-goal loss drops the Lancers to 5-9-1, 4-5 in the PacWest. APU improves to 11-2 on the season, 8-1 in conference.
CBU opened the contest strong, pushing into the Cougar territory early and often. Josue Soto gave the Lancers their first dangerous chance of the day, forcing the APU goalkeeper to just tip it over the crossbar 10 minutes into the contest. The Lancers found what they were looking for, however, in the 22nd minute as Jeromy Gurule scored his first goal of the season. Soto sent a threatening corner kick into the box, where Wyatt Deane got a head on it and redirected it on frame. The Cougar goalkeeper made the save, but couldn't hold onto it, allowing Gurule to finish the rebound with ease.
Despite a 10-to-5 shot ratio in favor of CBU at halftime, the Lancers knew APU would fight back. The Cougars did, scoring back-to-back goals in the 51st and 57th minutes of action to take a 2-1 lead.
Still, the Lancers dug deep and kept fighting, desperate for an equalizer, and were rewarded in the 87th minute. After Soto collected the ball from the middle of the field, he dribbled toward the Cougar goal, taking on multiple defenders. Once he had a good look on goal, Soto buried it into the far right corner of the goal, passed an outstretched arm from the APU goalkeeper to make it even at 2-2.
No stranger to overtime action, CBU got the first shot of extra time off in the first period from Aidan Apodaca, but it missed just wide.
It was APU that would find the golden goal, however, ending the game in the 109th minute to win it 3-2.
The Lancers get a little more time to rest before hosting Holy Names on Thursday, kicking off at 12:30 p.m.
