2014 GREATER LOUISVILLE CLASSIC MEN'S RESULTS
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For the first time in program history, California Baptist University competed in the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic, a preview of the 2014 NCAA Division II Championship Meet, held at the E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
The Lancer men had an impressive sixth-place finish for a total of 254 points in their competition with 41 other teams. A total of 125 colleges competed, including 24 men's teams and 27 women's teams that are currently ranked in the NAIA, NCAA Division I Regional/National, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III Cross Country polls.
"I think we can still run much better, but it was nice to see us finish right behind Edinboro, which is ranked 21st nationally," said head coach Ben Gall. "I think the guys learned a lot and gained some valuable experience from this trip."
Taylor Guske led the Lancer men to their sixth-place overall finish in the 8,000-meter blue race with his 25 minutes, 10.31 seconds, finishing 14th overall out of 356 runners.
"I feel blessed to be able to come out and run strong on our cross country national course and hope that I can come out at nationals in two months and run even stronger for my team," said Guske.
Junior Abdel El-Hajjami trailed Guske and took the 25th spot overall with his recorded time of 25:28.98.
"I felt better than the previous races. I wanted to run smarter and to run the race the most regularly possible," said El-Hajjami. "The result isn't bad, but it's not good either. It's not enough, it's an important step to see where are we and to put in place some adjustments with the team."
Sophomore Valentin Robert landed the 44th spot, with his posted time of 25:40.99, while Hector Hernandez was a few seconds behind him finishing in 85th and logging a time of 26:02.19.
"I believe overall we gained a lot of valuable experience about what it is going to be like to travel far from home and run in the cold and wind on an all-grass course," said Gall. "This trip should really help everyone in their preparation for the future races we have coming up in November and December, where will be forced to travel and adjust to similar conditions that are much different from Southern California."
The Lancers return to action on Saturday, October 11 at the Vanguard Invitational in Costa Mesa, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
