2014 GREATER LOUISVILLE CLASSIC WOMEN'S RESULTS
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For the first time in program history, California Baptist University competed in the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic, a preview of the 2014 NCAA Division II Championship Meet, held at the E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
The Lancer women took 18th out of 32 total teams and tallied 485 points in all.
A total of 125 colleges competed, including 24 men's teams and 27 women's teams that are currently ranked in the NAIA, NCAA Division I Regional/National, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III Cross Country polls.
Caroline Barkechir led the Lancers to an 18th-place finish in the 5K gold race, with her 17:40.26 posted time for a 29th place finish out of a total 300 runners.
"I was very happy with our top three women (Caroline, Veronica, and Alicia) who really performed well today and carried the team," said head coach Ben Gall. "Our women were able to defeat Winona State who is ranked 11th in the national polls right now, so that was a big boost of confidence for them."
Following close behind Barkechir were teammates, Veronica Hall (17:56.92), Alicia Williams (18:14.91) and Millie Leitich (19:05.54).
"I was excited to come and see the course where the nationals are going to be held," said Hall. "I also knew it would be great competition and the only 5k we will run this year, so I wanted to run under 18 minutes for the first time. I'm glad our team was able to come to Kentucky and I was able to accomplish my goal."
"I believe overall we gained a lot of valuable experience about what it is going to be like to travel far from home and run in the cold and wind on an all-grass course," said Gall. "This trip should really help everyone in their preparation for the future races we have coming up in November and December, where will be forced to travel and adjust to similar conditions that are much different from Southern California."
The Lancers return to action on Saturday, October 11 at the Vanguard Invitational in Costa Mesa, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
