PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- With its final appearance at home in the rearview mirror, California Baptist University began a road trip that will last the rest of the 2014-15 season Friday with a visit to Embry-Riddle.
In a battle of top-20 teams from the NAIA and NCAA Division II, the 18th-ranked Lancers in D-II won out with the dominant performance they hoped for, 31-9, over the No. 12 Eagles of the NAIA. CBU won seven of the 10 matches and put the dual away by winning five-straight bouts from 133 to 165 pounds. The victory moves the Lancers to 4-1 this season, while Embry-Riddle slips to 0-1.
David Dill opened the night with a major-decision victory at 285 pounds, but the Eagles pulled within one after a win at 125. CBU lifted off from there and rattled off five-straight wins, thanks to Peter Cunningham (133), Alex Anunciation (141), Matt Hickman (149), Nolan Kistler (157) and Alec Smith (165) remaining undefeated on the year.
Cunningham and Anunciation pinned their opponents to give the Lancers a 16-3 lead, while Hickman, Kistler and Smith notched decisions and with Kistler's coming in overtime to increase the advantage to 25-3.
Embry-Riddle halted the run and enjoyed a modest one of its own with victories at 174 and 184. Paul Head ended the dual with a pin to cap the scoring at 31-9.
CBU will remain in Arizona for the Embry-Riddle Open Saturday morning, looking to bring some additional individual honors home.
