LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Going into halftime down five goals, California Baptist University was looking to mount one of the comebacks in the WWPA Championship semifinals that has been characteristic of the gritty squad this season.
CBU scrapped in the second half but was ultimately unlucky, with several shots off the woodwork and a handful of other finger-tip saves spoiling its comeback attempt, in a 15-9 loss to the top-seeded and sixth-ranked team in the NCAA, UC San Diego Saturday afternoon at Loyola Marymount.
Not without a bright spot, CBU received another standout game from sophomore goalie Joseph Moorman. The Riverside native had nine saves in the game, which moved him closer to topping the program's single-season record for saves of 415, as he has 411 with another game left in 2014. The current leader is also the Lancer women's water polo head coach, Jonathan Miller.
In addition to a program record, CBU will look to end its season with a win in the WWPA third-place game with the loser of Saturday's other semifinal between fourth-seeded Loyola Marymount and No. 2 UC Davis this weekend at 11:15 a.m. The Lancers sit at 15-19 on the season, while UC San Diego bumped up to 14-9 in 2014.
Clint Walling, Brent Teraoka and Nick Candau led the Lancers' offense with two goals each. A total of six CBU players got on the scoreboard.
The Lancers came out strong, with Candau providing an early spark. The sophomore two-meter scored twice in the first 4:32 of the game to give the Lancers a 2-1 lead. Thomas Henline also got on the board with 1:05 left in the first before the Tritons scored another to take a 4-3 lead into second.
From there, UCSD went on a 5-0 run that spanned into the third quarter. Cody Wetherbee broke the run with an improbable shot that skipped just under the far-post crossbar. The Tritons rattled off consecutive goals from there to take an 11-4 lead with 5:35 to play.
CBU kept hope alive but also met some tough luck in the second half. Teraoka looked to start a Lancer run with a six-on-five goal at the 5:15 mark of the third, but the underdogs had four quality shots stopped by either the post or the fingertips of the Triton goalie over the next three-and-a-half minutes.
Walling scored his first goal 22 seconds before the fourth quarter, which started a 3-0 run for CBU. About 1:15 into the final frame, Teraoka scored and 20 seconds later Davor Koret scored to pull the Lancers within 12-8. Consecutive tallies from UCSD put the game out of reach, with Walling capping the scoring at 15-9 with 12 seconds left.
