LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- For the third time in a row this week, California Baptist University faced top-20 ranked NCAA teams Saturday in road games at No. 16 Loyola Marymount and No. 20 Whittier College.
The Lancers pushed the Lions into overtime behind a Nick Candau goal with 40 seconds to play in regulation before suffering a 20-17 loss in what was the highest-combined scoring game in the history of both programs. In the nightcap, CBU fell to Whittier 13-10 behind a fourth-quarter rally from the Poets.
CBU moved to 13-17, 1-6 in the Western Water Polo Association, LMU improved to 7-15, 3-2. Whittier improved to 18-12.
At LMU, Cody Wetherbee had a team-high five goals for CBU, followed closely by Brent Teraoka's four and Candau's three. Eric Carnohan and David Ring each had two tallies for the Lancers. Joseph Moorman had 10 blocks in the cage. Against Whittier, Teraoka, Candau and Ring each had two goals for the Lancers.
In the WWPA clash, CBU and LMU combined for 10 goals in the first quarter, with the first eight minutes ending with both sides knotted at 5-5, with Teraoka and Candau both scoring twice in the frame. The back-and-forth battle did not end, with CBU's opening a 2-0 lead tying for the highest margin of the game until overtime.
After trailing 10-8 early in the third, CBU answered back and took a 13-12 lead after Wetherbee opened the fourth with back-to-back goals. The Lions responded with two of their own, which forced the Lancers to come back late, as Wetherbee scored again at the 3:22 mark to tie things at 14-14 and Candau evening things back at 15-15 with 40 seconds left in regulation.
Carnohan scored first in extra time, but LMU rattled off the next three to take a commanding 19-16 lead with 1:51 left in the contest. Wetherbee capped CBU's scoring with 1:32 to be played.
