Muting the Mustangs

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Van Dyne Gym erupted when California Baptist University squeaked out its first victory over NCAA Division I foe Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last season. This year, the Lancers went out on the road and defeated the Mustangs by a score of 18-15, improving on their one-point victory from 2013-14.
It still all came down to one match, though, Saturday. CBU's 197-pounder Paul Head lifted whatever weight was on his shoulders and delivered the Lancers' win with an 8-3 victory over Cal Poly SLO's JT Goodwin, which stood as CBU's largest margin for victory on the day.
"It's a great story, it was the same matchup as two years ago when it came down to Paul Head and [JT Goodwin]," Coach Lennie Zalesky said. "I knew Paul was a better wrestler, so I was confident in him, but he had some nerves, I could tell that."
CBU won six of the 10 matches to hold off the Mustangs by one decision after it posted a pin victory to remain in contention. Along with Head, David Dill, Christian Betancourt, Matt Hickman, Alec Smith and Jacob Waste were all victorious for the Lancers. The CBU-Cal Poly series is now tied at two duals apiece.
"I felt like there were some matches we could have won, so we could have won by a bigger margin," Zalesky said, "but it was exciting -- that's for sure."
With the dual starting at heavyweight, Dill got CBU moving in the right direction with an 11-8 decision over Nicolas Johnson. Christian Betancourt followed that up with a 6-4 win over Yoshi Funakoshi, as the Lancers took a 6-0 lead.
As expected, the Mustangs answered back with consecutive decision victories of their own to tie things at 6-6. Matt Hickman kept them from taking a lead, with a 7-3 win over Jacob Leon in his Lancer debut. Colt Shorts helped Cal Poly rebound, as it took its first lead, 12-9, after his pin.
It was a short-lived lead, as Alec Smith won his second-straight match this season with a 4-2 win against Travis Berridge to tie things back up at 12-12. Dominic Kastl gave Cal Poly another 15-12 edge with a hard-fought, 6-4 win over Christian Smith, who was also making his CBU debut.
Waste forced the fourth tie of the dual with a 2-0 win against Nick Fiegener, which left 197 as the winner-take-all bout. Waste starts the 2014-15 season at 2-0, along with Betancourt and Alec Smith, after that trio each won their matches against Stanford during CBU's first annual Take It Outside dual last week.
CBU returns home Wednesday for the CBU Duals when it will take on Palomar and USC's club team starting at 6 p.m. in the Van Dyne Gym. It will also serve as Senior Day for the Lancers' Dill and Zachary McKenna, as it is their final home event of the year.
