RIVERSIDE, Calif. — While it may have been just the third dual of the season for California Baptist University, it was its Senior Day on Wednesday. The Lancers used the chance to flex their muscle and depth to their fans in nonconference matches with Palomar Junior College and the USC club team.
CBU outscored its opposition 99-9, defeating the Comets 48-3 and the Trojans 51-6. Several Lancers won both their matches to help their team improve to 3-1 this season, with Christian Betancourt (125 pounds) picking up two victories with a technical fall and pin, Peter Cunningham (141) and Nolan Kistler (157) each won their matches with pins.
The Lancers scored the first 36 points of their dual with Palomar, with Betancourt notching a 17-2 technical fall over Frank Sandoval and Cunningham, Matt Hickman (149) and Kistler pinning their opponents. Bradley Christensen (165) capped the big run with a 5-3 decision against Erik Collin. Christian Smith kept the Lancers' trend of lopsided wins going by majoring Oscar Ramirez, 12-4.
After the Comets stopped CBU's run, the home team closed out the dual with back-to-pins from Paul Head and senior David Dill. In addition to Dill, it was also Senior Day for CBU's 125 Zachary McKenna.
There was no doubt the Lancers had a win waiting for them against the Trojans, who forfeitted five matches. Betancourt ensured the victory with a pin of Aaron Frankel and Joshua Ho-Lopez defeated Nick Stavrou (133) by a score of 11-7. Cunningham earned his second pin of the year over Sean Yuan before USC earned its only six points with a forfeit at 149. Kistler ended the night early with a pin of Alvin Wong just 29 seconds into the bout.
CBU will be on the road for the rest of 2014-15, starting first with a trip to Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) for a dual on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. and the Embry-Riddle Open on Nov. 22.
