SAN FRANCISCO – For the third year in a row, California Baptist University wanted to walk away from the California Collegiate Open with a championship in hand, but someone new would have to step up as the Lancers did not return any reigning champs to the event.
Jacob Waste was up to the challenge, going 4-0 on the day to capture the event's 184-pound championship, his second title in as many weeks after also winning the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open last Saturday. He also extended his winning streak to 19 matches in the process, topping Southern Oregon's Jacob Abrams in the finals 3-1.
Waste was joined by five other Lancers who placed in the top four Saturday. Peter Cunningham and Christian Smith each took second place in the 141 and 174 brackets, respectively. Alex Anunciation (149), Paul Head (197) and Alec Smith (165) all bounced back from losses to take third place in their weight classes.
Early on, Waste posted a 10-3 decision over MSU Moorhead's Michael Urban in the first round and then teched Lukas Poloncic, 20-5, in his next outing. Faced with a Division I wrestler in Bakersfield's Sean Pollock, Waste was challenged in the semis but was more than up to it as a 6-2 decision sent him into the championship round.
Cunningham won each of his first three matches with decisions. He bested Southern Oregon's Trevor Hancock 8-2 and then edged an unattached Zechariah Bresser, 6-4, in the second round. The true freshman advanced to the finals with a 6-2 decision over MSU Moorhead's Phillippe Walker before running into CSU Bakersfield's Timmy Box. Cunningham battled but ultimately lost on decision, 9-4.
Christian Smith extended his winning streak to 10 matches before falling to Southern Oregon's Brock Gutches in the 174 finals. He started his day with a pin of Paul Bracamonte of Menlo College at the 4:21 mark and then skunked Southern Oregon's Chris Moreno, 9-0, to move into the semis. He was challenged by Cody Jones of Southern Oregon before posting an 8-4 decision victory to advance.
Anunciation (149) won his first two matches, starting with a 15-8 decision against Southern Oregon's Tanner Canaday and a 6-3 edging of Tyler Lawrence. Anunciation was a takedown away from the championship round, as Cal State Bakersfield's Coleman Hammond – the eventual champion – squeaked by him, 3-2. The junior finished his day on a winning note, reaching the consolation finals with a dramatic 5-4 overtime win against CSUB's AJ Fierro and eventually clinching third place with a 12-6 decision over the unattached Taylor Hall.
Paul Head (197) won his first match against Southern Oregon's Brad Hyatt with an 11-1 major before being dropped into the consolation bracket. He defeated Ciaran Ball's by a score of 7-2 to take bronze in the bracket.
Alec Smith (165) started his day with a 6-0 victory over Kennen Lanteri but dropped to San Francisco State's Vince Aboyes, 6-3, to move into consolation action. He passed Bryan Battiso 12-2 and then shutout Lanteri again in the consolation finals, 5-0.
Harlan Kistler (184) went 2-2 on the day after being dealt a tough 3-1 loss in his first match. He bounced back nicely with a pin of his teammate Bryce Benlian 32 seconds into the second period and then got past Coffman, 5-1, before suffering an 8-7 loss and seeing his day come to a close.
Zach McKenna (133) went 2-2 on the day. He started with a 17-3 major of Jonas Norman and later posted a 14-5 victory against Simpson's Hayden Zimmerman in the consolation bracket.
Dakota Thayer (141) went 2-2 Saturday, pulling out a dramatic 9-8 win against Jack Kim. He also won by two points in the consolation bracket, taking down Hancock by a score of 4-2.
Micah Lopez (165) won his only match of the day – a 14-5 major of Southern Oregon's Brock Crocker – before having to withdraw with an injury.
