RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University wrestling team closed out the 2025 calendar year against Northern Colorado on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the visiting Bears 18-16 in a closely-contested dual.
The Lancers would earn four match victories, including two with bonus points, but could not secure the dual victory as they fell to 1-6 in duals on the season. The Bears pick up their second dual victory of the season and their first in BIG 12 action.
The dual would begin at 174lbs as Mason Espinoza would take on Murphy Menke of Northern Colorado. NoCo would strike first with a decision victory and would do the same at 184lbs to get a quick 6-0 start in the team score. The Lancers would get on the board at 197lbs as Eli Sheeren would dominate his matchup over Tyler Perry. Sheeren would collect two first-period takedowns and then two more in the third period, with nearly two minutes of riding time, to secure a 13-3 victory. The major decision for Sheeren was the first of two matches with bonus points for the Lancers, and would slice the lead to just two points.
At heavyweight, Tristan Kemp would secure six more points for the Lancers as he would force five stalls on his opponent, which would automatically disqualify him from the match. Northern Colorado would inch within one point at 125 pounds as they would secure a decision victory from Aydan Thomas. The 133lbs match was the lone ranked matchup of the evening as #29 Remy Murillo faced off with #9 Dominick Serrano for the Bears. Serrano, a 2x NCAA qualifier and BIG 12 placer, would hang on for the decision win and give the Bears the lead back at 12-10. The lead would grow by three more points at 141 pounds as the Bears would pick up another decision.
The Lancers would get two much-needed victories at 149 and 157lbs, with Paul Kelly and Drayden Morton continuing their early-season success. Kelly would pull off a tactical victory over former Lancer Emilio Trujillo-Deen at 149lbs, and Morton would secure a sudden victory takedown to defeat Daishun Powe at 157lbs. The dual would come down to 165 lbs with CBU clinging to a one-point lead. The Bears would take the match by a 4-1 decision over Kilian Schultz, securing the dual meet 18-16.
NEXT: The Lancers will host #21 West Virginia at Mt. SAC College in Walnut, California, for its annual collaboration with Beat the Street and Titan Mercury Wrestling on Sunday, January 11 at 2 PM PT.
