Streak Breakers

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Going into Thursday's matchup with Dixie State, California Baptist University had one thing on its mind: take points off the Red Storm.
Dixie State, which had yet to concede a conference loss, sat one spot above the Lancers in the PacWest standings. The Red Storm also came into the game holding a seven-game streak of not surrendering a goal.
That all changed Thursday afternoon as CBU battled from behind to grab a 1-1 tie.
The Lancers move to 5-6-2 overall, 4-3-1 in the PacWest. Dixie State remains unbeaten in conference with 8-1-3, 6-0-3 marks.
From the beginning, CBU controlled the possession and challenged the Red Storm, making it only a matter of time before it would find the back of the net.
Julian Ekeze looked like he might break through the Red Storm's scoreless barrier in the 32nd minute. James Bogdanovich sent in a low ball into the 18-yard box where Ekeze tried to redirect it into the net. A Red Storm defender thwarted his chance, keeping it 0-0.
Despite the Red Storm not getting many shots in the first half, Dixie State would walk into halftime with a 1-0 lead after capitalizing on a defensive miscue.
Junior Guerra drew a hard foul in the 76th minute to put Bogdanovich at the penalty shot, just 12 yards away from snapping the Red Storm's scoreless streak. The senior defender converted the shot with ease, evening the score at 1-1 with just under 14 minutes to play.
Intensity mounted as the clock hit the 10-minute mark.
Gio Rodriguez gave the Lancers the chance for a go-ahead goal in the 85th minute, sending a shot on goal, but couldn't get it in the back of the net.
While neither team wanted extra time, it seemed to be inevitable as neither team would give up a late game-winner.
Aidan Apodaca gave the Lancers their first chance of a golden victory in the second-overtime period, forcing the Red Stork goalkeeper to make a save in the 101st minute.
The Lancers kept pressing, hungry for that game-winner, but couldn't find the golden goal to finish the game with the 1-1 draw.
CBU doesn't get much time to digest this result, however, heading to Fresno for a Saturday kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
