FRESNO, Calif. — California Baptist University's Noah Oyler came up big for his team Saturday evening, but couldn't completely keep Fresno Pacific out of the net. The Lancers surrendered two second-half goals to fall 3-1 to the Sunbirds.
CBU drops to 5-7-2 overall, 4-4-1 in the PacWest. FPU improves 11-2-2, 8-1-1 in conference.
Oyler was busy from the start of the game as FPU fired off a shot on goal in the fifth minute of action, but Oyler made the save. The sophomore goalkeeper made four saves within the opening 12 minutes to keep his team in the game.
The Sunbirds kept pressuring, however, and found the back of the net in the 13th minute.
Daniel Westholm gave CBU its first look on offense in the 22nd minute, firing off a shot that was blocked by a Sunbird. Dario Garcia tried to redirect the rebound on goal, but put a little too much on it to send it over the net.
A little more settled into the game, CBU kept looking for an equalizer to tie things up before going into halftime, but just couldn't seem to get past the Sunbird backline.
Coming out of the break, the Lancers looked more like themselves as they rattled off the first shot on goal of the half. Westholm got a good look at the net, but the FPU goalkeeper managed to make the save to keep his team up 1-0.
In the 52nd minute, Oyler came up big time once again. After FPU drew a penalty kick, Oyler made the improbable save.
The Lancers seemed to be taking control of the game, feeding off of Oyler's saves, but FPU took a little of the steam out in the 62nd minute as it scored to make it a 2-0 game.
Less than five minutes later, CBU was called on a handball in the box. Despite making the penalty kick save 13 minutes prior, Oyler couldn't repeat the feat and the Lancers found themselves in a 3-0 hole.
Nevertheless, the Lancers kept fighting and caught a break as the Sunbirds had to play the last 12 minutes down a man after one drew a second yellow card.
With less than four minutes on the clock, Aidan Apodaca cut the scoreless barrier off a breakaway pass from Junior Guerra.
FPU closed out the remaining minutes to take the game 3-1.
The Lancers return home for one last home stand, hosting Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. CBU concludes the regular season on the road in the Bay Area the following week.
