RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Just two days before Halloween, California Baptist University was treated to a 2-0 victory over Chaminade Thursday afternoon.
The Lancers improve to 6-7-2 overall, 5-4-1 in the PacWest. The Silverswords fall to 1-12-0 on the year, 1-9-0 in conference.
"I told the guys before the game, 'Let's focus on these last four games,'" said Coach Gregg Schroeder. "It matters how you finish. I thought we started the way we want to finish the season."
Just five minutes into the contest, the Lancers struck first. Aidan Apodaca passed off the ball to Julian Ekeze, who drew a defender off Jeromy Gurule. With the senior forward now open, Ekeze slotted the ball over to Gurule at the penalty spot, just needing to beat the goalkeeper, which he did with ease to give CBU an early 1-0 lead.
The Silverswords seemed to settle into the game a little more after the first goal, but not enough to swing momentum in favor of the visitors as CBU scored again in the 25th minute. A Chaminade defender tried to clear Junior Guerra's cross, but couldn't change the path of the ball enough as it fell to James Bogdanovich on the far post. Bogdanovich took one touch inside to thwart his defender and drilled his shot into the back post to make it 2-0.
While Chaminade did get into the Lancers' defensive third of the field, the Silverswords didn't really get much out of their chances as the CBU backline, backed by goalkeeper Noah Oyler, held the visitors to four shots in the first half. Only one of those gave Oyler a real threat as it hit off the crossbar and back in play.
CBU, on the other hand, had seven shots, putting four on goal in the first half. The Lancers came out of halftime bringing the same energy, despite making their first lineup change of the game to start the second half.
Thomas Carter got into the attack from the outside back position, firing off a dangerous shot through traffic in the 60th minute, but the Silversword goalkeeper made an important save. CBU tried to follow through on the rebound, and found the back of the net, but the goal didn't count as the Lancer was called offside.
Carter got another chance at the goal in the 82nd minute, but couldn't get it past the Silversword goalkeeper.
Chaminade got into the attack in the last five minutes, but it was a little too late as the Lancers held on for the 2-0 win.
CBU ends its home season on Saturday as it hosts the conference's third-place team Hawaii Pacific at 3:00 p.m. Four seniors — Julian Ekeze, Jeromy Gurule, Dominic Escalera and Thomas Carter — will be honored at halftime.
