RIVERSIDE, Calif.— Tensions were raised, crowds were cheering and electrifying matches took place at the second consecutive Take It Outside wrestling meet with the California Baptist University Lancers competing against the NCAA Division I Bakersfield Roadrunners.
Both teams lived up to the hype centered around the dual, which created thrilling matches that gave a crowd of 2,082 an entertaining show as CSUB grabbed the win, 28-12.
"The biggest thing we learned from this is to wrestle the third period hard, and stay on the guy, giving them no rest," said Coach Lennie Zalesky, who was without two of his former All-Americans on the day.
Despite the loss, it was Anthony Racobaldo's performance that stole the show Saturday afternoon. The freshman 133-pound wrestler won in emphatic fashion pinning his opponent in the very last second of the match.
The New Jersey native impressed even before his pin with slick, quick shots and exuded great composure throughout the match.
"At the beginning, I was a little nervous going on to the mat in front of such a big crowd, but once we started wrestling all the nerves went away," Racobaldo said.
Scoring a takedown in the second period with a minute left, Racobaldo was able to turn his opponent, collecting a five-point nearfall making the score 10-4. Going into the third and final period, the freshman saw his chances and capitalized on them.
"After a while I started to control the match and at the end he started to tire out, so I threw him to his back and collected six points for the team," Racobaldo said.
"He's a great competitor and a great athlete," Zalesky said of Racobaldo.
The other two victories for the Lancers came from 149-pound wrestler Brady Bersano, with a score of 10-4, and heavyweight Joe Fagiano, who picked up a narrow 7-6 win.
Bersano tied his match 2-2 going into the third period. Starting the third period from top position, Bersano locked up a cradle and collected a four-point nearfall and then a two-point nearfall quickly after the first.
The Lancers are back in action next Saturday at the Embry-Riddle Open, before returning home to host Mercyhurt Nov. 25th at 7 p.m.
