RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Down the whole game, California Baptist University was in need of some late-inning dramatics in its series opener with Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday night at James W. Totman Stadium.
Despite some strong play late that resulted with the tying run reaching base, the Lancers ultimately fell to the Toros, 2-1. CSUDH improves to 5-1 on the year, as it prepares to host CBU Friday at 1 p.m. in Carson. The Lancers look to move above .500, currently boasting a 2-2 record. Adam Hofacket had a quality start for the home team, allowing just six hits and striking out eight in six innings.
Cal State Dominguez Hills was gifted with a great start from left-hander Winston Lavendier, who threw 8 2/3 innings. The Toros scored first in the fifth and again in the seventh when Brady Conlan hit a one-out homer on a line.
CBU started its comeback attempt in the eighth. Jake Gallaway gave the Lancers a big boost with a leadoff double to the left field warning track. A perfectly-placed bunt down the third-base line from Zack Norris went for a single and moved Gallaway to third. CBU kept the pressure on when Norris stole second to put both runners in scoring position.
Andy Crowley gave CBU its first run of the game with a deep sacrifice fly to right field. With two outs, Lavendier was able to escape further danger with a strikeout.
The Lancers created more trouble for the Toros in the bottom of the ninth, as Lohr singled with two outs to chase Lavendier out of the game. A pinch runner was brought in for CBU, but was cut down attempting to steal second to end the contest.
Lohr and Norris each had two hits for CBU. With Crowley, Taylor Wetzel and Gallaway also having one of the Lancers' seven base hits. Stephen Carajabal allowed just two hits and one run through 2 2/3, also striking out five, as a relief pitcher for the home team.
