More One-Run Fun

After being held to one run in the 2-1 loss the night before, Coach Gary Adcock shuffled around his batting order and got some good results. The Lancers totaled 12 hits in the game, with four players having more than one hit. Andrew Montoya arguably provided the biggest one when he turned a full count into what stood up to be a game-winning RBI single up the middle in the eighth inning.
CBU improved to 3-2 on the year, while the Toros fall to 5-2 heading into the rubber match Saturday at Totman Stadium at noon.
Stephen Lohr led CBU's offense again, as he put together a 3-for-5 performance that included a double, run batted in and another scored. Zack Norris was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run, as well. Andy Crowley finished 2-for-4 with a solo home run, while Nathan Antoun was 2-for-3 on the day with a double for the Lancers.
The Toros managed to strike first for the second game in a row, scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Consecutive first-pitch RBI doubles from Lohr and Antonio Chavarria gave CBU a 2-1 edge in the third, which was sparked by a Norris leadoff single.
In the fourth, Brian Ruhm was hit by pitch on a 0-2 count and then stole second to start the inning. A walk to Antoun and sacrifice bunt from Andrew Montoya put two runners in scoring position. With the pressure on, Norris worked his way into a 2-2 count before driving a ball into center field for a sacrifice fly and 3-1 lead for the visitors.
CSUDH continued to show its grit in the series, scoring in the fourth and fifth innings to tie things back up at 3-3.
With two outs in the seventh, Crowley found himself with a hitter's count of 2-1 and turned on a pitch and sent it over the right field fence for a home run and 4-3 Lancers' lead. It was short lived, however, as the Toros tied things again at 4-4 in the bottom half of the frame.
The big two-strike hitting continued in the eighth for CBU. Freshman Luke Navigato continued his strong play with a leadoff single on a 2-2 count. Navigato moved up to second after Antoun singled through the right side on a full count. Montoya was also faced with a full count before he singled up the middle to drive home the game winner.
The dramatics were not yet done, though. The Toros had the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the bottom of the eighth before reliever Austen Zimarik induced a flyout to left field to end the inning. CSUDH got a leadoff double to start the bottom of the ninth and moved him to third with one out on a sacrifice bunt. Zimarik kept his cool and got a groundout to shortstop and fly ball to center field to save the win.
David Herd came on in relief in the fifth inning for CBU. He got the win and now is seven victories shy from becoming the Lancers all-time win leader. He allowed four hits, no walks, one run and struck out four through 3 1/3 innings.
