RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University started PacWest action Friday night against the team it ended conference with last year.
The Lancers outscored Holy Names by 11 runs, claiming 6-0 and 6-1 wins, to improve to 13-3 overall and open PacWest with a 2-0 record. The Hawks fall to 1-11 on the season and open conference in a 0-2 hole.
Savannah Miller led the Lancers with a 5-of-7 showing at the plate, knocking in five runs while scoring two of her own. Jordan Mowatt (three runs, one RBI), Ashley DeVaere (one RBI), and Jacque Lopez (one RBI) each laid down two base hits on the night.
Loie Kesterson picked up her seventh win of the season, allowing just two hits in the first game, while Kayla Hatch grabbed the nightcap victory, striking out four batters along the way.
After being held quiet for the first two innings, CBU plated two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. With runners on second and third, Miller found the gap in right center to allow both runners to score before the Hawks could grab three outs.
CBU tacked on a run each in the fourth and fifth, while threatening more. DeVaere led off the fourth with a single to center and Chelsea Rosario took over the base running. She stole second and advanced to third as the Hawks grabbed a putout. Tayler Castro then hit a hard-to-handle ball to short, allowing Rosario to make the game 3-0 in favor of the home team.
With one out in the fifth, the Lancers loaded up the bases. DeVaere drew a walk, advancing each of the runners to make the score 4-0 for CBU. HNU managed to keep the Lancers off the plate in the next at bat, grabbing the force play at home and followed with the third out to get out of the jam.
The Lancers put the game completely out of reach in the bottom of the sixth as they scored two more runs on two hits. With two outs, Sarah Murphy took a rogue ball to the body for a free trip to first and proceeded to steal second. Mowatt blasted a base hit to center and Murphy never looked back as she rounded third, safely tagging home. In a similar fashion, Mowatt scored from second as Miller sent another single to center as Mowatt turned on the jets to plate the sixth run.
Belinda Renne — who has been battling an injury — stepped into the circle for the first time this season and caught a Hawk looking as she kept the visitors scoreless to end the game.
In the nightcap, HNU couldn't hold off the Lancers in their first chance at the plate as Kailey Willingham sacrificed a fly ball to score Miller.
CBU added an insurance run in the second as Murphy took advantage of a bobbled ball in left to make it a 2-0 game.
The insurance paid off as HNU got on the board in the top of the fourth, cutting the Lancers' lead in half, but CBU responded in a big way in the bottom half of the frame.
Mowatt singled to left and scored as Miller doubled to center field. Krista Mann followed with an RBI double of her own, scoring Miller in the process. Mann got the green light to go home on a base hit from Jacque Lopez and Heather Smith plated the fourth run of the inning after the Hawks botched the throw home.
With her team in front 6-1, Renne took to the circle once again in the top of the seventh, just needing three outs to secure the victory. Despite a runner getting on base, CBU turned a double play — its third of the night — and DeVaere snagged a foul ball to give the Lancers the doubleheader sweep.
The Hawks and Lancers finish the four-game series tomorrow with another doubleheader, scheduled for a noon start.
