SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Kavan Eubank has drawn high praise from California Baptist University's coaching staff since he stepped on campus. The freshman won his first individual championship Tuesday, while the Lancers continued to shine, as well, to place third at the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Classic.
Eubank was a perfect model of consistency this week, taking the lead on the first day with a pair of 69s in the first two rounds. He shot a 70 in the third and final round to finish with a 208 and win the title by three strokes. CBU broke 300 in all three rounds with a 299 Tuesday to finish with an 873 (287, 287, 299).
"Obviously, it was a fantastic performance for Eubank to win a major [NCAA] Division II tournament like that," Coach John Hackney said. "He's an exceptional talent and we all know it, so it's good to see him get his first win."
Third-ranked Chico State won the team title with an 864 (282, 291, 291) and Redlands, the eighth-ranked team in NCAA Division III, finished in second with an 869. The Lancers did edge 23rd-ranked Dixie State (874) by a stroke in the standings.
"We got off to a bit of a rough start, but played well in the middle," Hackney said. "It was real tight with a few holes left but Chico State finished it off. Still, third is the highest we have ever placed in that tournament. It was a tough field and a tough course and we played well."
It was another all-around performance for CBU. Greg Gonzalez held on for 15th place by shooting a 74 Tuesday to finish with a 218 (75, 69, 74). Tai Kuida carded a 222 (70, 77, 75) with a 75 in the third round to take 26th.
"Greg had a world class scrambling day," Hackney said. "He only hit three greens, but still shot 74. He got up and down from everywhere. You have to give him a lot of props for battling with everything he had today.
"Tai had a solid day in the wind. It was really blowing hard and he did a great job to shoot 75."
Neil Hand completed a three-round 229 (76, 73, 80) after shooting an 80 Tuesday to take 47th. Christian Sanders was the final Lancer to compete and took 51st with a 231 (73, 76, 82).
Next for the Lancers is the St. Edward's Invitational at the Grey Rock Club in Austin, Tex. CBU will look to continue its upward trend in the second half of the season, as it aims at cracking the NCAA Division II rankings and winning a PacWest title.
"We are starting to show we're ready for the primetime over these last two weeks," Hackney said.
