RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Home-course advantage has paid off for Tina Yang at the California Baptist University Invitational the last two years, as she repeated as the individual champion at the Lancers host event at the Victoria Club Tuesday afternoon.
While the rain clouds disappeared and sun emerged Tuesday, a frosty morning turned into an afternoon with strong winds, which made for a challenging second and final round for the 10-team field. Yang carded a four-over-par 76 to finish with a 149 (73, 76) that was two strokes better than runner-up Crystal Wang of Academy of Art's 151 (74, 77).
Tenth-ranked CBU had the second-best round as a team Tuesday, with a 314, to end up with a 632. It was not enough to overcome Academy of Art's 628 (312, 616), as the Urban Knights won the team title and the Lancers finished runner-up.
Like the first round, it was a top-four PacWest finish with Point Loma taking third (634) and Dixie State (639) rounding out the quartet.
"It was a solid day all the way around for her," Coach John Hackney said of Yang, who has finished in the top-10 four times and never outside the top 11 in any of her five tournaments. "She had 31 putts and hit 11 out of 13 fairways and 10 greens, so it was a great day and a great tournament for her. We believe she's one of the best players in the country and she's continuing to show that."
Yang's 76 tied two other players for best round of the day. The Lancers' Natalie Park matched that to finish in a fourth-place tie with a 155 (79, 76). Point Loma's Kathleen Crossley ended up with a 154 (78, 76) to take third after producing a 76 in the final round as well.
"She was great with her putter, with no three putts today, which is great on these greens with this wind," Hackney said of Park. "She was just solid, if she made a mistake she scrambled and turned it into a bogey, which is what champions have to do."
Marvi Monsalve had a team-best, seven-stroke improvement on her first round score Tuesday for CBU. She fired a 79 to end the day in 21st with a 165 (86, 79).
"I am proud of how Marvi battled," Hackney said. "She didn't have her best stuff, but she stuck in there and was very good around the greens with 28 putts."
The Lancers final scorer was Tayler Hoag, who carded a 167 (84, 83) to take 25th. Laura Scrivner also competed for CBU on the team side and produced a 170 (82, 88) to take 28th.
While her score did not count toward the team score, the Lancers received a big day from Katherine Pimpanit. Competing as an individual, she carded a 162 (83, 79) to finish in a 15th-place tie. Nicollette Gino also had a good tournament to take 17th with a 163 (81, 82).
Next up for CBU is the Augustana College Spring Fling Invitational at the Classic Club in Palm Desert on March 19th. The Lancers will look to continue to improve down the stretch.
"These girls want to win, they're not playing for second," Hackney said. "They didn't even care to grab the (second-place) trophy today – that's good, I want them to be competitive. We expect a lot of them and they expect a lot of themselves.
"We're off to a good start. We just have to keep working."
