LOS ANGELES, Calif. – On what appeared to be just another day at the Occidental Distance Carnival for California Baptist University, yielded historic and nationally significant performances from Valentin Robert and Abdel El-Hajjami.
Significant in many ways, Robert walked away with the highlight of the young season for the Lancers in the steeplechase. The French native took second in the event in a remarkable eight minutes, 59.44 seconds. Robert finished just .39 of a second off the winner, Bennett Naden, who ran unattached.
Not only did Robert set a new a new program record with the time, but it gave him an NCAA Division II qualifying time. The mark also stands No. 1 in Division II this season.
El-Hajjami was not going to let Robert have all the fun, as the junior transfer and fellow Frenchman posted a NCAA Division II B-cut time of 14:33.12 in the 5000-meter, which stands as a top-three standard in the division so far.
Bruk Assef was not too far off his teammate's tale and finished in 14:47.86 and 23rd place in the event.
In the 1500-meter, Lucas Graham and Tyre Hines finished close together at 16th and 18th, respectively, with times of 4:00.88 and 4:01.30. The Lancers' Daniel Swann also won his 800-meter heat with a personal-record time of 1:57.15, which put him 30th overall.
The Lancers take a break before heading south for the Point Loma Invitational on March 28. First gun is set to go off at 10:00 a.m.
