LOS ANGELES, Calif. — It may still be early in the season, but California Baptist University is showing it is making strides toward the postseason. The Lancers had a strong showing Friday night at the Occidental Distance Carnival in just their third competition.
In her first time running the steeplechase event, Katie Deimling didn't look out of step at all. The freshman clocked in at 11 minutes, 24.35 seconds, beating out Alaska Anchorage's Bryn Haebe by more than six seconds for first place.
Morgan Spurlock also had a good showing in the event, taking 12th with a time of 12:35.85.
Caroline Barkechir not only set a new personal record, but she also set a new CBU record in the 5K. She crossed the finish line in an NCAA Division II "B" time of 17:02.36 — which is also one of the top times in the division — to take third in the race.
Claire Rainey also had a personal-best time in the 5K, clocking in at 18:17.29 for 27th.
While she may not have hit a qualifying mark just yet, missing it by one second, Alicia Williams is on track to hit the mark this season. The freshman finished the 800-meter in 2:15.32 for a seventh-place finish. Teammates Charlie Davidson and Millie Leitich had strong performances in their respective heats, with Davidson beating out the rest of her heat in 2:21.45 and Leitich finished in second at 2:20.43. Madison Hiatt finished 11th overall with a time of 2:18.13.
The Lancers take a break before heading south for the Point Loma Invitational on March 28. First gun is set to go off at 10:00 a.m.
