RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In many ways, including the result, the second meeting between California Baptist University and Montana State Billings was similar to the first -- just longer, much longer.
CBU and MSUB set a Great Northwest Athletic Conference record for innings in a game, as the 16-inning, nearly four-hour stalemate was won out by the Lancers on a score of a 4-3 with a pinch-hitter A.J. David providing the walk-off RBI single.
"It was a long one, I'm glad it's over," David said, "but we did a really good job of sticking through that as a team.
"These dramatic wins pump us up, it gives us a ton of motivation for tomorrow and the next day. This boost of confidence is going to be big in helping us the rest of the way."
The marathon now stands as the longest game in the Gary Adcock era at CBU, which dates back to 2004. The previous record, which dates to 2003, was a 13-inning affair against Point Loma in 2003. Halfway through the non-conference series, CBU has pulled even at 8-8 and the Yellowjackets have fallen to 5-13. The four-game set continues at James W. Totman Stadium Friday night at 6 p.m.
Just like the series opener Wednesday, the Lancers jumped out to an early lead with a run in the second inning and two more in the fourth. Freshman Ryan Williams drove in CBU's first three runs to finish 3-for-6 with two RBIs. Fellow freshman Luke Navigato went 4-for-7 for CBU, while Jake Gallaway had two hits.
Taylor Wetzel hit aboard with one out and then moved all the way to third on passed balls. Still, Williams needed to come up with a base hit to score the first run of the game, as there were two outs in the inning. He did just that, lining a double down the left-field line to draw first blood.
In the fourth, Antonio Chavarria drew a leadoff walk and then moved to third after a one-out single from Gallaway. Williams plated Chavarria with a single through the hole at third base and shortstop. Nathan Antoun plated the third and final run of regulation for CBU with a soft single back to the pitcher.
Despite falling into a 3-0 hole, Montana State Billings had another answer for the Lancers Thursday night. It came in the form of a three-run fifth inning that included four hits, as the visitors knotted the score at 3-3.
It would remain that way for the next 11 innings. Tyson Miller got the start on the mound for CBU and went five, allowing six hits, three runs, three walks and striking out seven. Patrick Gonzales, Jonathan Davis and David Herd kept the Lancers in the hunt for a win with solid outings.
Gonzales went four innings, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out two. Davis went three frames, walking two, giving up one hit and adding four punch outs. Herd picked up his third win of the year and moved closer to history by going four innings in which he allowed just three base runners and struck out five.
Offensively, CBU had several chances to win in extras, as it got at least one runner on base in each of the six additional frames. None came to fruition until the 16th as Andy Crowley, who extended his hitting streak to 16 games, led with a single. Stephen Lohr was intentionally walked after a passed ball and Chavarria moved both runners to scoring position with a perfect sacrifice bunt. Coach Gary Adcock called on David under the bright lights, and the junior transfer delivered with a screaming line drive over a drawn-in left fielder to end the game.
"It was the 16th, I was just waiting the whole game for my opportunity," David said. "I sat around for a long time but eventually I got my shot and I took advantage of it."
