See-Saw Series

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In 26 innings played out over two days, California Baptist University and Montana State Billings had battled through see-saw affairs. The theme continued in the third game of the series Friday at James W. Totman Stadium, but it was the Yellowjackets that pulled out the win for the first time in the series by a score of 6-3.
MSUB improved to 6-13 and CBU moved to 8-9 on the year, as a result. The finale will play out Saturday at noon at Totman Stadium. The Lancers will look to convert their chance to win the series before beginning PacWest play.
For the second night in a row, freshman Luke Navigato led the Lancers with a 2-for-4 showing. Taylor Wetzel also batted .500 (1-for-2) with a run-scoring double and stolen base. Antonio Chavarria also drove in two runs and scored, going 1-for-4, while Andy Crowley extended his hitting streak to 17 games to open the year.
CBU pitcher Jeremy McDonald started Friday night by striking out the first four batters he saw. He finished the game with nine strikeouts through five innings. He allowed two runs, although just one was earned.
Montana State Billings got on the board first in the top of the third, but its lead was short lived. In the bottom of the inning, Crowley sliced a one-out single down the left-field line. A walk to Stephen Lohr and a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position.
Chavarria took advantage of the golden scoring opportunity and scored both runners with a hard shot up the middle. Not done yet, Wetzel continued the one-out rally with a hard line drive all the way into the corner in right field to give the Lancers a 3-1 edge.
The Yellowjackets continued the no-quit attitude they showed in the series and managed to score the final five runs of the game, with one in the fifth, two in the sixth and two more insurance runs in the ninth, to claim the victory.
Austen Zimarik put together a fine showing out of the bullpen for CBU. He went 3 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits and no walks. He struck out five and saw two runs score, although both were unearned.
