Clean Sweep

AZUSA, Calif. — The last time rivals California Baptist University and Azusa Pacific met, the Lancers had to come from behind in dramatic fashion to grab a doubleheader sweep.
While CBU swept the Cougars once more on Saturday, there wasn't really a flair for the dramatics this time. The Lancers took the first game 1-0 and exploded in the nightcap for an 8-1 win.
With the four-game series sweep over the Cougars, CBU improves to 35-9 overall and 22-6 in the PacWest. APU drops to 24-21, 12-13 in conference.
The first game came down to a pitcher's duel, with Loie Kesterson coming out on top. The left-handed pitcher threw seven complete innings, allowing just two hits, to grab her fifth shutout of the season.
Despite CBU loading up the bases on three-straight walks in the opening frame, the Lancers couldn't cash in until the fourth inning.
Jacque Lopez led the top of the fourth with a deep shot to center field, which the Cougar outfielder couldn't handle to send Lopez to third on the error. Tayler Castro joined her on base with ball four and Sarah Murphy sent in Lopez by singling through the left side.
The Lancers looked to tack on more runs in the top of the seventh, looking for some insurance, but APU held them off. Jordan Mowatt started the inning with a leadoff double down the left field line and Savannah Miller followed with a base hit through the other side. A fielding error loaded up the bases with no outs, but the Lancers couldn't cash in the runs as the Cougars grabbed three-straight outs.
Back on defense, CBU kept its 1-0 win in tact to give Kesterson her 18th victory of the season.
It didn't take long for the Lancers to score in the nightcap, however, as CBU opened with four runs in the first inning. Miller led things off with a bunt single and was joined on base as Krista Mann got a free ride to first after being patient on a full count.
Ashley DeVaere loaded up the bases with a single up the middle before APU managed to grab one out. Lopez walked in the first run of the day and Castro cleared the bases with a three-RBI double at the gap in right center.
The Cougars found a response in the bottom of the second, plating one run on three hits but left three stranded as CBU got out of the jam.
Neither team could send runners home in the third and fourth innings, but CBU struck again in the fifth and sixth frames, threatening to end the game early.
Miller led the fifth off with a base hit through the right side and was sent home as Mann blasted a triple deep to center. DeVaere joined Mann on base and advanced to second as the Cougars grabbed the first out.
As Lopez laid down her first pitch, Mann took off for home and beat out the throw to make it 6-1 in favor of the Lancers. DeVaere tacked on one more run after tagging at third as Castro sacrificed a fly ball to left field.
APU put a runner on in the bottom half of the inning, but CBU kept its composure on defense and turned a double play to keep the Cougars from cutting into the 7-1 margin.
In the top of the sixth with runners on the corners and two outs, DeVaere sent a hard-hit grounder through the gap between third and shortstop to send Mowatt home. The Cougars cut the two-out rally short, ending the inning before the Lancers could threaten to pull a mercy-rule win.
After seeing the Lancers put together a successful comeback two weeks ago, APU tried to pull one of its own. With two outs, the Cougars put runners on second and third, but Kayla Hatch got ahead in the count and forced the batter to lay down a routine grounder to third to end the game.
CBU takes a brief break from conference action one last time before postseason, heading to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. for a doubleheader. The Lancers conclude the regular season at home on April 24 and 25 as they host Dominican (Calif.) for a four-game series.
