CARSON, Calif. — In its final nonconference showdown before postseason, No. 17 California Baptist University got straight to work and took two off Cal State Dominguez Hills with 5-0 and 11-0 (five innings) victories.
The Lancers improve to 37-9, while the Toros fall to 21-23.
CBU wasted no time to load the bases in the first inning of the day, as Savannah Miller laid down the first hit of the day with a single up the middle. Two walks later, the bases were loaded with no outs.
Kailey Willingham hit a hard-to-handle ball back to the pitcher, but the Toro couldn't make a play to allow the senior first baseman to reach first safely and allow Miller to score the first run. Jacque Lopez drew ball four on a full count, advancing each runner to score Krista Mann from third.
CSUDH managed to grab three-straight outs to end the inning before CBU could get too much going on.
The Toros kept the Lancers off the board in the second and third, but Jordan Mowatt helped the visitors tack on another run in the top of the fourth on one out. She tucked a base hit just fair down the left field line, allowing Tayler Castro to give CBU a 3-0 lead, and Heather Smith tagged up on Miller's sacrifice fly to increase the advantage even more.
Jenna Lieber put the final cap on the Lancers' scoring in the sixth with a solo shot over the fence at right field. As soon as the ball came off her bat, it was clear it was sailing over the fence to put CBU in front 5-0.
Loie Kesterson kept the Toros quiet throughout the game, allowing just five hits while striking out three to claim her 18th win and sixth shutout of the year.
The Lancers started the nightcap in similar fashion with the visitors taking an early lead in their first chance at the plate. With Miller on third, Mann sacrificed a fly ball deep to center to grab the RBI and put CBU up 1-0.
Lieber blasted her second home run of the day over the fence at left to start a big second inning. With Sarah Murphy and Miller on base and one out, Mann singled to center to grab another RBI as Murphy touched home. Miller and Mann then came home on an Ashley DeVaere single to the gap at left center.
CSUDH kept the Lancers quiet in the next two innings, but CBU exploded in the fifth to put pressure on the home team to find some runs.
With one out and bases loaded, Mowatt knocked her first collegiate home run in style as the ball sailed over the fence at right for the grand slam.
Miller kept the offensive charge going with a double to right and was joined on base by Mann with a free ticket to first. The Toros found a second out, but Willingham drew another walk to load the bases once more. Lopez took advantage and singled up the middle to score two, putting the Toros in a deep 11-0 hole.
After Kayla Hatch had gone four stellar innings in the circle, allowing just two hits and striking out three, Belinda Renne secured the 11-0 win as she struck out the final batter.
CBU gets some time to recover before closing out the regular season next weekend at home against Dominican (Calif.). The Lancers and Penguins face off on Friday at 5:00 p.m. for a pair of games before concluding the four-game series on Saturday at noon.
As the season winds down, wins are crucial for postseason as the first NCAA Division II West Region rankings come out Wednesday. The top eight teams from the division will battle it out at two different regional sites before the top two teams meet for a super regional to see who advances to the final rounds in Oklahoma City, Okla., at the end of May.
