RIVERSIDE, Calif. – All the momentum belonged to California Baptist University heading into its doubleheader with Hawaii Hilo Friday after ending Thursday with a walk-off win. The Lancers will take even more momentum into St. George, Utah, after winning both games with the Vulcans Friday.
The Lancers extended their winning streak to six games by shutting out UHH to open the day, 11-0, and then completed the series sweep with a 5-3 victory. CBU improves to 20-14, 12-4 in the PacWest and the Vulcans return home with a 6-25, 4-20 record.
Offensively, the Lancers stayed hot. Andy Crowley went 6-for-8 on the day with five runs and three doubles. Stephen Lohr and Antonio Chavarria both went 5-for-8. Chavarria had four RBIs, two runs and two doubles. Nathan Antoun was 3-for-8 with four runs, three doubles and two RBIs.
"We have depth this year, and we have been relying on our bench this season," Chavarria said of the offense's success. "Hawaii Hilo played well this week, and we knew we couldn't take them lightly because they could have won two games here."
As had been the case throughout the series, the Lancers started Friday scoring early and often. A one-out Crowley single was followed up with an RBI double into center from to give CBU a 1-0 lead.
Crowley wound up playing a part in the Lancers' first three runs of the game. He led off the third with a double to right center and scored on an RBI grounder from Antoun. Alec Morabito started the fifth with a single and came home on a Crowley double.
A Chavarria single, followed by an error in right field scored Crowley, extending the advantage to 4-0 in the inning. The fifth would not come to an end until Brian Ruhm plated two runners with a two-out single into center field.
The 6-0 cushion turned into 8-0 when Ruhm and Jake Gallaway singled in runs in the seventh. The scoring came to an end on RBI doubles from Chavarria, Antoun and a Ruhm RBI single.
Ruhm went 4-for-5 with four RBI in the game. Crowley was also 4-for-5 with four runs and his RBI, while Chavarria and Stephen Lohr both went 3-for-5 and Chavarria drove in two runs. A.J. David batted 2-for-4 with two runs in the contest.
Adam Hofacket took care of things defensively for CBU. He threw eight innings to set up the shutout, striking out seven batters, which was more than the base runners he allowed on six hits. Dylan Stowell finished off the shutout with a spotless inning of work.
Jeremy McDonald threw all seven innings in the finale for the Lancers, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out eight.
Crowley, Chavarria, Antoun and Lohr each went 2-for-3 in the finale. Chavarria drove in two runs and scored twice himself, with his two-run homer in the fifth helping turn the tide for good. Antoun scored and doubled twice in the contest.
It took a while for both offenses to get going to end the day, but it was Hawaii Hilo who broke through first with a run in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom half, a one-out single and double from Chavarria and Antoun, respectively, sparked a CBU rally. David drove in Chavarria with a grounder to second and Lohr doubled home Antoun with two outs to give the Lancers a 2-1 edge.
With how well the Vulcans had played in the series, CBU knew it needed more insurance. It came on Chavarria's opposite-field homer to left center, scoring Crowley who had led off with a single. Antoun doubled his way aboard and then traded places with Steven Pena, who doubled into left field to score the Lancers' final run of the game for a 5-1 lead.
Hawaii Hilo scored twice in the top of the seventh, but McDonald shut the door to deliver the 5-3 win.
CBU's biggest series of the season is up next in Dixie State. The Red Storm lead the PacWest with a 22-8, 17-1 conference record and 10-game winning streak. The series starts Thursday at 5 p.m., continuing with a nine-and-seven inning doubleheader Friday and ends Saturday with a 10 a.m. start.
"I feel confident with the team right now," Chavarria said. "It was a good series win, and I am glad we got this momentum going into Dixie. They're a tough team and we have to take care of business out there."
