IRVINE, Calif. — The way California Baptist University has been running this season, it seems the Lancers are saving the best for last as they keep getting better in hopes of competing in their first-ever NCAA Division II Championship.
"It was a great weekend for us," said head coach Ben Gall. "We had a lot of personal records and strong performances."
After setting a new school record in the 800-meter last week (2:11.40), Veronica Hall did it again Saturday at the Steve Scott Invitational, hosted by UC Irvine. The junior shaved off almost three full seconds to cross the finish line in two minutes, 8.8 seconds. The time marks the seventh fastest in all of NCAA Division II.
Teammates Alicia Williams and Millie Leitich also caught the speedy bug, running the event in personal best times to join her in the all-time CBU performance list. Williams finished in 2:12.4 to provisionally qualify for the championship meet in a few weeks, May 21-23 in Allendale, Mich., and sit in third in program history, while Leitich ran in 2:17.75 to rank 10th.
Kim Rabenstein led the Lancers in the 1500-meter with a time of 4:43.29 with teammate Katie Deimling right on her tail at 4:44.01 — the fastest time she's ran so far in her career.
Leitich also grabbed another personal best time, clocking in at 4:51.31. Charlie Davidson and Claire Rainey came in right after Leitich, crossing the finish in 4:51.69 and 4:52.36, respectively. Davidson's time was a personal record, while Rainey's marked the fastest she's ran this season.
Up in Oregon at the Oregon State High Performance Meet, Caroline Barkechir won the 10K event in a new facility record of 35:53.86, despite dealing with some wind. She beat out numerous Division I athletes, including runners from Oregon State, Portland State and Lipscomb.
"It was fun for her to get the win and set a new record, even with the wind," said Gall.
The Lancers will rest up this week with one last competition on the docket before the championship meet. CBU looks to run hard next weekend at the Occidental Invitational, hoping to either finish the season strong or move up in the nationals list to qualify for the championships.
