ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- After coming into the NCAA Division II West Regional as the fifth seed, California Baptist University wanted to overcome its ranking. The Lancers were able to do that, but unfortunately just missed out on shocking the nine-team field by qualifying for the Division II Championships with a top-three finish.
CBU took fourth place in the West Region, an improvement on its sixth-place performance from 2014, with a 908 (307-295-306). Tarleton State (893), St. Edward's (898) and Sonoma State (902) took the top-three spots in the tournament.
"Obviously, any time you get to the NCAA postseason it's a good experience," Coach John Hackney said. "We have been [to the Regionals] two years in a row now and we have Marvi, Natalie and Tayler with all at least two years of playoff experience. Hopefully that will bode well for us next year. This was a great experience for everyone here because there was a lot of pressure. This is a great field of teams, everyone can play and you can't afford any mistakes."
For the most part, the Lancers played well enough to advance to their first ever NCAA national tournament, but the start of the back nine caused some problems. Holes 10, 11 and 12 caused three road bumps with 13 strokes over par in all, which played a big part in the Lancers finishing six strokes back of qualifying.
"A couple of big holes just killed us in a short little stretch, we could have been in second place if we had those 13 shots back," Hackney said. "The girls battled hard and played well, it's just one of those things."
The Lancers had hopes of qualifying an individual for the national championship for the second year in a row, with the top-three individuals on a non-qualifying team advancing. Laura Scrivner came the closest for CBU, but fell just shy with a sixth-place and 222 (77-70-75) performance.
"Laura just struck the ball brilliantly for three days, she got her putter going on the last two days," Hackney said. "She has great length off the tee, so the holes play smaller for her. It made it a different golf course for her. It's something you can't teach, she just hits it that far."
Marvi Monsalve, Natalie Park and Tina Yang all shot 77s in Wednesday's final round, while Tayler Hoag carded a 79.
Monsalve (74-77-77) and Hoag (75-74-79) tied for 24th place with each finishing with 228s. Park tied for 31st place on the individual leaderboard with a 232 (81-74-77). Yang's best performance of the tournament landed her in a tie for 40th with a 239 (81-81-77).
"It was a good year, we have gone to the Regionals back-to-back now," Hackney said. "We just have to see if we can take another step next year and build from here."
