RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Saturday morning California Baptist University stayed close to home and competed in the UC Riverside Invitational for their second event of the season and finished with a fifth-place showing, despite resting seven of the Lancers' top runners.
"I was very pleased with the progress the men made today," head coach Ben Gall said of his athletes. "We feel like we have a lot of depth this year and were able to show that today."
Impressive performances came from Jorge Estrada (26:33.2), who took fifth in the collegiate open, as he shaved a full minute off his personal record. Tyre Hines (25:40.9), who also improved on his personal-best time, ran 37 seconds faster than the previous year, finishing as CBU's top runner in the Invitational. Freshman Ken Kipokir (25:49.9) and junior Jeremiah Gotts (25:55.9) also had impressive performances, with Gotts shaving 49 seconds faster than last year's performance.
"Our goal was to go out and run a race where the team was running stronger the 2nd half and we felt like they did that."
Next weekend, the Lancers split to make two separate trips to Seattle and Master's College. Eight men head to Seattle for the Sundodger Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 19, while the rest of the Lancers head to the Mustang Challenge on Friday, Sept. 18.
