RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Despite creating multiple chances on goal, California Baptist University couldn't find the back of the net Saturday afternoon. UC San Diego took advantage of a penalty kick and held the Lancers off for the 1-0 win.
The Lancers drop to 0-3-1, while the Tritons improve to 3-1-0.
"It's disappointing to not get the result we were looking for, but we are getting better every day," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "The strength of schedule we have is incredibly difficult for a reason, to help prepare us for conference. We need to be a little sharper on the attacking end of things. We were a little unlucky on the attacking side today, but UCSD is a good team."
UCSD came out shooting just a minute into the contest but couldn't get anything on frame, sending the shots high or wide.
In the 13th minute, however, the Tritons drew a penalty kick and slipped it into the net to take a quick 1-0 lead.
The Tritons looked like they might get another just two minutes later, but Sara Escobedo wouldn't allow that on her watch, making the save to keep her team in the game.
Justene Kesterson got a good look at the frame in the 19th minute as Chaylin Couzens sent a ball across the box. Kesterson sent the one-time touch on frame, but Triton goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky came up with a good save to keep her net unscathed.
Although the Lancers knew they needed to find an equalizer coming out of the half, UCSD opened with the first shots of the second frame, forcing Escobedo to continue to make saves.
Couzens, who is the only Lancer to have scored this season so far, put her shot in the 52nd minute on goal, but once again Brodsky stepped in the way to keep it 1-0.
Kailey Nishimura's header shot in the 70th minute would be the last shot the Lancers would take the rest of the game, despite working their way up the field to pressure the Triton defense. UCSD held firm, however, to walk away with its 1-0 victory.
CBU has one last non-conference tune-up next week against Chico State before it opens PacWest play on Sept. 24 on the road. The Lancers head north to take on the Wildcats on Thursday, Sept. 17, kicking off at 7:00 p.m.
"We're trying to wrap up non-conference on a high note, but Chico State is another good team," said St. Clair. "It'll be another tough test. We haven't seen what we've wanted on the results column, but from an execution and performance side, we're continuing to improve. We're young but we're making good strides and getting sharper every day."
