Unfortunate Finish

CHICO, Calif. — Despite getting their chances offensively, California Baptist University couldn't find the back of the net Thursday night to finish non-conference action with a 4-0 loss to Chico State.
The Lancers fall to 0-4-1 as they begin conference action next week, while the Wildcats improve to 3-1-1.
"We're playing well, we're just not finishing," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "I thought we were the better team on the night, but we got unlucky. The score is not indicative of how the game went."
Both teams finished the night with five shots on goal, but Chico State was only off target on one of them. CBU posted 13 shots total, while the Wildcats had 12 on the night. Chaylin Couzens and Lauren Wallberg each provided two of the closest chances the Lancers would get, while Justene Kesterson hit the final shot on goal.
"Our execution is getting better and our defensive shape was better," said St. Clair. "We created a lot of dangerous opportunities, but got unlucky on the finishing side. Their goalkeeper made a couple of good saves, too. Chico State is a good team."
Chico State struck first in the 11th minute, but CBU held the Wildcats off for the remaining 34 minutes to go into halftime with only a one-goal deficit.
Down 2-0 halfway into the second half, Couzens gave the Lancers a good chance of battling back into the contest. She sent a shot on frame, forcing the Wildcat goalkeeper to just parry it around the post for a corner kick.
Still, the Lancers couldn't get passed the goalkeeper and quickly found themselves trailing 3-0 with 20 minutes left to play. Chico State put the final dagger of the game in the 85th minute, sealing the 4-0 result.
CBU gets a week to regroup before beginning PacWest action on the road back in Northern California next week. The Lancers face Holy Names on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. (at Cal State East Bay), before taking on Dominican on Saturday at noon.
"We'll get back to work and focus on conference," said St. Clair. "We're young, but we scheduled these tough games on purpose to get us better. We need to continue to get healthier, but we're playing well."
