RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Saturday morning California Baptist University stayed close to home and competed in the UC Riverside Invitational. In the 5K collegiate open, the Lancers beat out 13 teams to finish fourth as a team against tough competition.
Despite resting seven of the Lancers' top runners in the event to prepare for an upcoming race in Seattle next weekend, it didn't stop them from showcasing their strength as a team.
"I think we were able to showcase a lot of depth today and prove that we are a team that is going to be very competitive," Gall said. "Overall it was a great day for us."
Alicia Williams finished ninth at the Invitational with a time of 18 minutes, 14 seconds. Claire Rainey, who was the second fastest runner for the Lancers, finished with a time of 18:27.5, placing 18th at the collegiate open. Other notable performances came from Kim Rabenstein, who clocked in with a time of 18:50.7 in her first race of the season after recently recovering from an injury.
"Alicia and Claire ran excellent races and showed us today that they are capable of having a major impact in the postseason for us," head coach Ben Gall said.
Eight Lancer women head to Seattle for the Sundodger Invitational next week on Saturday, Sept. 19. The rest of the Lancers will compete at the Master's College Mustang Challenge on Friday, Sept. 18.
