RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University's women cross country team — who ranks 13th in NCAA Division II and fourth in the West Region — competed in two events Saturday morning. The top seven runners raced in the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, while the second squad competed in the Santa Clarita Mustang Challenge.
It was a solid day's work for the Lancers as they finished second at the 6k invitational hosted by University of Washington. It was a performance that beat the defending regional champs and 10th-ranked Simon Fraser, who placed eighth.
The event saw another strong effort from Caroline Barkechir, who finished sixth in the event with a time of 21 minutes, 35.46 seconds. Alana Enabnit (22:19.31), Claire Rainey (22:21.40), Alicia Williams (22:23.12) and Katie Deimling (22:25.06) all had exceptional races and contributed to the excellent team performance.
"This was a big confidence booster," head coach ben Gall said.
CBU also competed without Veronica Hall, but the senior will rejoin the team shortly, which Gall believes will just make his team stronger.
Back in California, the second squad competed in the Mustang Challenge, facing tough competition with the likes of division I powerhouses UCLA and Loyola Marymount. The women put up a strong fight to finish 11th on the day with a notable performance from Berenice Cleyet-Merle, who placed 13th in the race with a time of 18:14.93.
The Lancers return home to host their second meet of the year, the CBU Invitational, next weekend Saturday, Oct. 3rd.
